10 Cloverfield Lane 2 Possibility Addressed By Director Amid Franchise Revival

Oct 22, 2023

Summary

Director Dan Trachtenberg is open to re-teaming with Mary Elizabeth Winstead to make a sequel to the well-reviewed 10 Cloverfield Lane. The movie ends on a cliffhanger, with Winstead’s Michelle escaping the bunker and heading off to join the fight against the alien invasion. A direct sequel to the original Cloverfield is currently in development, but a movie continuing the story of Michelle might have been the most interesting path forward for the franchise.

10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg addresses the possibility of 10 Cloverfield Lane 2 as the franchise heads towards a movie revival. Released in 2016, the sequel to 2008’s Cloverfield explores the implications of an alien invasion on a much smaller scale, with Mary Elizabeth Winstead starring as a woman determined to escape a survival bunker she’s being held hostage within. The movie earned strong reviews and ends on something of a cliffhanger, but a direct sequel has never materialized.

Now, with Cloverfield 2 currently in development, CinemaBlend asks Trachtenberg whether he would be interested in revisiting his story within the larger franchise. While it doesn’t sound like anything is in the works, the filmmaker is certainly not opposed to the idea. Check out Trachtenberg’s full comment below:

The [upcoming] sequel is to the original Cloverfield. But for our film, I would still totally be open to it. I think Mary would. … We talked a little bit in like ‘what if’ scenarios. And then I was pulled, all the filmmakers were sort of pulled into other things. But I would still consider it. There’s a lot that would be in the genre that that would be in, but you never know. The sequel they’re making is very cool.

How 10 Cloverfield Lane Sets Up A Sequel

After escaping John Goodman’s Howard, Winstead’s Michelle learns that he was mostly telling the truth about the outside world not being safe. Michelle trades one threat for another and faces off against an alien creature during the film’s final act. The 10 Cloverfield Lane ending sees Michelle driving off to join the fight against the larger alien invasion taking place, with her fate left uncertain.

Unfortunately, despite 10 Cloverfield Lane being the best-reviewed movie in the franchise, the next movie would once again introduce a new cast of characters in a new story. The Cloverfield Paradox hit Netflix in 2018, taking the franchise to outer space and exploring the origins of the events of the first film. The movie earned fairly abysmal reviews, however, and it was uncertain for a long time how or whether the franchise would proceed.

Now, Cloverfield 2 is confirmed to be in development, with the flick set to serve as a direct sequel to the original. While it will be interesting to further explore the fight in New York City against the monster, all the original characters in that movie seemingly die by the time credits role. Winstead’s Michelle proved herself to be quite a formidable hero in Trachtenberg’s movie, and further pursuing her journey in 10 Cloverfield Lane 2 might be an exciting path forward for the franchise.
