Veteran James Gunn Actor Pitches Themselves As The DC Universe’s Poison Ivy

May 2, 2023

One of James Gunn’s veteran actors expresses interest in joining the new DC Universe as the Batman foe, Poison Ivy. As the DCEU comes to an end, the DC brand is going in a new direction for live-action. With Gunn wrapping up his time with Marvel Studios, the filmmaker is going full-time with Warner Bros. as part of DC Studios. Under Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios leadership, the studio is currently building the new DC Universe, another attempt at an interconnected franchise for Warner Bros.

While the new DC Universe hasn’t properly been launched yet, one of Gunn’s veteran stars is up for joining the franchise. Karen Gillan, who plays Nebula in Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, recently spoke with GamesRadar about what role she would want in the DC Universe. The Scottish actress name-dropped Poison Ivy as someone she would love to portray in Gunn’s franchise, sharing the following:

I always thought that Poison Ivy was really fun. So maybe something like that would be cool. Honestly, if James asked me to play an alien that sits in the background of a shot and doesn’t talk, I would say yes [laughs]. Because working with him has been one of the great joys of my career so far.

Could Poison Ivy Be In Batman: The Brave & The Bold?

As is the case with most of the heroes for the DC Universe, Batman is getting rebooted once again with the upcoming The Brave and The Bold movie. The film will focus on Bruce Wayne learning about the existence of his biological son, Damian Wayne, who will become Robin. While details are being kept under wraps, The Brave and The Bold will seemingly focus on a pretty established Batman canon, which makes for an interesting case for Poison Ivy.

While The Brave and The Bold will likely include Ra’s al Ghul, given Damien’s inclusion, the film could take a page out of The Batman’s book. Similar to the Robert Pattinson-starring film, the Batman reboot could have Poison Ivy appear as a secondary foe who gets set up for future installments. Even though Colin Farrell’s Penguin was in the film, he was never the primary villain in The Batman but is now getting his own Penguin spinoff show on HBO Max.

Poison Ivy is definitely a Batman villain who is due for a proper cinematic treatment, especially as she has been absent from the big screen since 1997’s Batman & Robin. If Gunn were to tap Gillan as his Pamela Isley, she would be a great choice, especially when looking at some of her previous body of work. Hopefully, Gillan will end up being one of the stars that Gunn brings over to the new DC Universe.
