How Has Farscape’s Legacy Inspired Modern Movies?
Farscape premiered on March, 19th, 1999 on the Sci-Fi Channel. Created by O’Bannon and produced by The Jim Henson Company and Hallmark Entertainment. Being a Henson project, the series consists of a colorful cast and takes place in an intergalactic series of worlds.

The synopsis can be read below.
Farscape follows astronaut John Crichton as a freak accident during an experimental space mission catapults him across a thousand galaxies to an alien battlefield. Suddenly, he’s trapped among alien creatures wielding deadly technology – a battle that 20th century sci-fi pop culture never prepared him for. Hunted by a merciless military race, Crichton begins his quest for home from a galaxy far, far away…
Farscape was planned for a total of five seasons but was abruptly canceled by the Sci-Fi Channel after production wrapped on season four. The reason being a split between declining viewership and expensive production cost. It was here when Henson stepped in, purchasing the rights to the series and developing Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars. Peacekeeper Wars served as the finale, wrapping up the cliffhanger ending of season four and giving a proper conclusion.
Despite the abrupt ending, Farscape grew a strong cult following over the years that is still as loyal as ever before. The series was praised by critics and audiences for its puppetry, special effects, and purposeful straying from the usual Star Trek formula. The series continues to inspire creators to this day, like James Gunn, who credits Farscape as an inspiration for his Guardians of the Galaxy films.
Thanks to Shout! Factory, fans now have an opportunity to fall in love with the beloved series all over again. The full show, including Peacekeeper Wars, can be viewed on-demand on Shout! Factory TV. There’s also the 24/7 live-streaming Farscape FAST channel, streaming episodes live for fans to tune in.
