May 15, 2023
True crime has exploded in popularity over the past several years. Every week, Netflix seemingly releases a new murder doc, while there are countless podcasts devoted to old cases. Now, this obsession is the crux of the new dark comedy series, “Based on a True Story.”

As seen in the trailer for “Based on a True Story,” the series follows the story of a realtor, a tennis player, and a plumber who attempt to capitalize on the popularity of true crime by using a podcast to exploit a series of murders in their neighborhood. Obviously, that wouldn’t make for a very funny show, so there is much more going on with plenty of hijinks along the way. But overall, the series aims to poke fun at America’s obsession with true crime.
The series stars Kaley Cuoco, Chris Messina, Tom Bateman, Priscilla Quintana, Liana Liberato, Natalia Dyer, Alex Alomar Akpobome, Aisha Alfa, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, and Li Jun Li. “Based on a True Story” comes from creator, showrunner, and writer Craig Rosenberg. He’s probably best known for his work as a producer on the hit Prime Video series “The Boys.”
“Based on a True Story” debuts on Peacock on June 8. You can watch the trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis:
A dark comedic thriller, BASED ON A TRUE STORY is about a realtor, a former tennis star and a plumber who seize a unique opportunity to capitalize on America’s obsession with true crime.
