MCU’s Kevin Feige Compares The Marvels Upcoming Reunion to The Avengers

May 25, 2023

While the MCU has a full plate with huge upcoming films like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and James Gunn’s emotional sendoff with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, studio head Kevin Feige currently has his sights laser-focused on one particular movie set to premiere mid-summer. Feige lavished his excitement for the upcoming ensemble film The Marvels in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly and discussed how he firmly believes that all three Marvel heroines uniting will be the latest pinnacle moment in the MCU, akin to a certain scene from the groundbreaking Avengers movie in 2012.

Following up on Brie Larson’s solo breakout film as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in the movie Captain Marvel (2019), Disney+ premiered a series called Ms. Marvel (2022) which followed a teenage girl named Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) who not only avidly idolizes Captain Marvel; she gains the similar ability to harness cosmic energy thanks to a special bangle she receives from her grandmother. Thanks to a teaser in the final episode of the series, we know that Kamala will be teaming up with Carol Danvers, along with Danvers’ friend Monica Rambeau whom we last saw in the limited series WandaVision (2021). Rambeau also gained superpowers when trying to physically traverse through the magical barrier Wanda Maximoff created around the town of Westview.

What to Expect in The Marvels

The premise of the upcoming film The Marvels will revolve around the three superheroines who mysteriously swap places with each other every time they use their powers. They must team up for the first time ever to figure out why. In the interview, Kevin Feige, who is producing the film, remarked that the reunion would be on the level of the iconic scene in The Avengers, where all six members gathered outside Grand Central Station in New York City to face off against Loki and his alien army.

“[The Marvels is] picking up directly after the end of Captain Marvel 1, not in timeline but in story. We also do that in our upcoming Disney+ series Secret Invasion, and those are two very different follow-ups to that movie. Tonally, they couldn’t be more different. But there’s something immensely powerful about seeing Monica and Kamala and Carol together in a frame. To me, it’s only akin to the first Avengers movie and seeing the six of them together in a frame. It’s chill-inducing. They’re so great together, and they all have different histories with one another.”

Feige also noted how Kamala Khan’s candid introduction into the ranks alongside fellow Avengers mirrors that of Tom Holland’s Spiderman in Captain America: Civil War (2016), where he was more busy being in awe of working alongside Earth’s greatest heroes, living his greatest childhood dream.

“Kamala Khan, for instance, is a great new character in the pantheon. I’m very proud of the Ms. Marvel show. I also know — and this is a spoiler — she essentially steals The Marvels […] The great thing about Kamala in her show, and now in this movie, is that she’s not unlike Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in Civil War. She can’t believe she’s with these other heroes, and can’t believe that she finds herself in these places. And that’s fun because we want to be that.”

The Marvels is set to premiere in theaters on July 28.
