James Gunn on the Age Gap Between Batman and Superman in the DCU

Jun 8, 2023

James Gunn is always willing to answer fan questions. Since his promotion as co-CEO of DC Studios, the division in charge of the new DCU and all Warner Discovery productions related to the comic book company, he has spent much of his days answering fan questions on social media, to avoid rumors and false information that may arise.

Weeks ago, Gunn announced the first projects that will be part of the first stage of his 10-year plan, which obviously includes the participation of two of the pillars of DC Comics: Batman and Superman. Both will have their movies in the new DCU, Superman: Legacy and Batman: The Brave and the Bold. In the latter, the Dark Knight will appear with his son, Damian Wayne.

For this reason, the announcement confused many fans because of the age difference between Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent, considering that the new Man of Steel will be quite young, and that is why Henry Cavill would not continue playing him in the near future.

James Gunn Clarifies the Age Range Between Batman and Superman

DC Comics

In a recent tweet responding to one of his followers, Gunn explained his own sayings and what they mean:

“Yeah but people are speculating about both ages. All I ever said was Superman was younger than in his forties and Batman MIGHT be a couple of years older than Superman.”

This wouldn’t be the first time The Dark Knight is a few years older than the Kryptonian hero. Ben Affleck, who shared the screen with Cavill in the universe created by Zack Snyder, is 11 years older than his co-star.

In addition, fans of the Caped Crusader will also be able to enjoy a young Batman navigating his early years as the vigilante of Gotham City thanks to Robert Pattinson. The actor will continue to give life to the character in the second part of The Batman, which has already been confirmed for 2025 and will continue to be the part of the “Elseworlds” franchise.

As for The Brave and the Bold, it is a story of Batman and his actual son, Damian Wayne. This is based on Grant Morrison’s great comic book run, and will see this iteration of Robin as a little assassin who Batman tries to get in line. It will be the beginning of what could be the Bat Family in the DCU.
