Dolph Lundgren Reveals He’s Working on The Witcher Spinoff

Jun 11, 2023

The world of The Witcher grows its its various spinoffs, and it’s looking like one of the upcoming shows will be starring Dolph Lundgren. While recently speaking with the Swedish publication Aftonbladet (per Collider), Lundgren explained how he now feels better than ever, happy with the tremendous progress he’s made with his cancer battle. The actor had only recently revealed publicly that he was diagnosed with cancer eight years ago and has quietly been battling the disease, having since had six tumors removed. Lundgren says he’s now feeling so well he’s back to work in South Africa to film a Netflix series that’s a part of The Witcher franchise.

Lundgren didn’t share any additional details about the show he’s a part of. The Collider report suggests it may be a spinoff that focuses on the Rats, a group of thieves that will debut in the upcoming third season of The Witcher with Henry Cavill. It was previously reported that a spinoff following the Rats was in development at Netflix and it was in production under the working title Riff Raff. According to the logline, the spinoff follows six teen thieves planning the ultimate heist.

Netflix previously released the animated spinoff movie The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf in 2021. There are plans to develop another animated movie at the streaming platform as well. Meanwhile, the live-action world has been expanded upon in the spinoff limited series The Witcher: Blood Origin, which premiered late last year. It’s also been previously reported that a more family-friendly animated series spinoff is in early development at Netflix.

Dolph Lundgren Overcomes Cancer

Lundgren, who memorably starred in films like Rocky IV, The Punisher, and Masters of the Universe, more recently appeared in the movies aWanted Man, The Best Man, and Section Eight. He also did voiceover work for the hit animated sequel Minions: The Rise of Gru. Lundgren can also be seen in the superhero sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, coming to theaters this year after several delays. The actor will return as Gunner Jensen in the upcoming sequel The Expendables 4, reuniting with his old pal Sylvester Stallone; the two also reunite in an episode of Stallone’s Paramount+ reality show The Family Stallone, which was just renewed for a second season.

This is made all the more remarkable given how far Lundgren has come with his cancer battle. He said on In Depth With Graham Bensinger that he was given two to three years to live at one point during the battle, and things were looking grim before he sought a second opinion with a more optimistic outlook. Since then, things have been looking much better for Lundgren, as the actor told Graham Bensinger.

“If I had gone on the other treatment, I’d have had about three to four months left,” he said. “2022 was basically watching these medications do their thing. Finally things had shrunk to about 90%. Now I’m in the process of taking out the remaining scar tissue in those tumors… The prognosis is that, hopefully, when they take these out, there’s no cancer activity and the medication that I’m taking is gonna suppress everything else.”
