Is Eleven’s End The Key to Survival?

Dec 21, 2022

In Stranger Things season 4, the danger escalated greatly. Now, while we wait for the fifth and final season, fans try to figure out how everything will come to the end.

Stranger Things is a fun and well-written series. It has managed to make us suspend our disbelief so much that we can easily accept monsters from other dimensions and children with psychic powers with zero effort. We feel like we are part of the hell-fire club; it is like we know these characters personally. With fans of the show so invested in the world of Stranger Things, it is no wonder that many of them come up with theories trying to predict the ending of the show since the latest season left them hyped and excited for more, even though we don’t have a release date yet.

The situation the characters are left in is bleak. How can our heroes save the day once again? Here’s a theory that could give us the answer.

Season 4 Introduced The Most Menacing Villain Yet

Netflix

During the fourth season, we met Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), the most menacing of all the villains so far. He needed the combined efforts of all the main characters in order to defeat him. Along with Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), we found out that he was controlling the Upside Down ever since she sent him there.

The new fan–favorite character Eddie (Joseph Quinn) had to sacrifice himself in order to protect his friends from the Demobats, Eleven’s group had to create an isolation tube for her to enter Max’s (Sadie Sink) mind, though she gets overwhelmed. When Mike (Finn Wolfhard) confesses his feelings, he gives her the extra strength she needed to break Venca’s control over Max, who tragically died from her injuries.

Meanwhile, Hopper (David Harbour), Joyce (Winona Ryder), and Murray (Brett Gelman) killed the remaining Demogorgons in the Russian prison, weakening Vecna. Steve (Joe Keery), Robin (Maya Hawke), and Nancy (Natalia Dyer) set fire and shot at his physical form, apparently killing him. Eleven used her powers to revive Max, but her brief death allowed Vecna’s gates to open and rip Hawkins right through the middle. The show ended two days later, with the town trying to recover from the “earthquake,” Max still in a coma, and Will (Noah Schnapp) sensing that Vecna is still alive.

Eleven Is The Key To Saving Everyone

Netflix

According to a theory posted by a fan on Reddit, the solution for everyone’s survival is Eleven’s end on earth. She has to replace Vecna in Upside Down, remaking it into a paradise.

They say in the theory that Eleven’s existence is causing all the problems with the Upside Down, attracting trouble like a magnet. It is impossible for her to have a happy ending with the other, normal kids. There is a pattern between her and her powers. Whenever she is using them to solve a problem caused by Upside Down, another shows its head. She opened the gate to banish 001, closed it, and then opened it again, causing Will’s abduction.

Later, she defeated the Demogorgon and closed the gate, but the Mind Flayer and Vecna came back. Losing her powers did not solve any problems since she had to regain them in order to defeat Vecna, continuing the never-ending cycle. The only way to stop it is if she takes 001’s place and control of Upside Down, turning it into a beautiful and peaceful place.

This means that as long as there are sorcerers who are born with these powers, there will be chaos as the UD erupts into Hawkins and the wider world. Therefore, the end of Eleven’s character arc shouldn’t be her forgetting her powers and being normal, it should be her becoming a Mentor archetype. As new children are born who can access the UD, she can contact them and teach them to do good – as she has decided not to follow 001 and 008 into evil. If Henry had had this, he may have become good. And future children like him can be guided by Eleven.

The user comes to the conclusion that this is the only way to have a complete and satisfying ending, without something open-ended and less fulfilling. Mike has to realize that they can not be together, move on, and grow up with all of his friends.

Does The Theory Hold Any Weight?

Netflix

We found this theory intriguing, yet we are still holding our breath for the fifth season. Then we can look back on it. While the theory is not nonsense, we can not help but feel like it is the most obvious outcome of the story. Yes, we need drama to care, and yes, the show has made it a tradition to kill at least one likable, popular character every season. So, it feels like taking Eleven away from her friends is something that the creators would do.

But is this what we need? Maybe it is alright for our escapist, sci-fi shows to have a happy ending. At the end of the day, our world is cruel and ugly, so let the characters have a bright future among loving friends.

Having said that, we have great expectations for the show. Maybe it will surprise us in other ways than just killing off characters. It is way too early to have any release date for the show, but more information will likely come out next year.
