Transformers Rise of the Beasts IMAX Review: ReEnergised

Jun 14, 2023

Nick Clement takes a look at the brand new Transformers movie now on the big screen and asks the question. Is franchise fatigue kicking in yet or does this new addition bring something new to the fold? We bring you his Transformers Rise of the Beasts IMAX review.

Optimus Prime and the Autobots take on their biggest challenge yet. When a new threat capable of destroying the entire planet emerges, they must team up with a powerful faction of Transformers known as the Maximals to save Earth.
If you enjoy seeing big, shiny, photo-real CGI robots beating the crap out of each other on the big screen, as I do, you’ll dig this new franchise re-boot, which actually pauses to tell a mostly coherent story that’s marked by some honest character beats.
But make no mistake, this is a blow-it-up-first-and-ask-questions-later picture, and on that level, they definitely had some fun. The look on our seven year old son’s face during the action-packed portions of this expensive absurdity was priceless to behold (you never forget your first time!), to say nothing of the flabbergasted expression he gave me when that final scene showed up – I won’t spoil it here – I’ll simply say that as a child of the 80’s, this particular creative swerve makes all the sense in the world.

In that sense it felt like a franchise reenergised but nothing too far out of the ordinary as for me it still lacks that Michael Bay Power. Whilst Transformers Rise of the Beasts was well-staged, I missed the auteur’s patented brand of visual mania; the stuff that Steven Caple Jr. did in this new one was polished (Enrique Chediak POWER), to be sure, but never shot-through with any sense of premium-level directorial style.
I want to give a special shoutout and some serious bonus points to whichever of the five credited writers who came up with the funniest joke in a big-budget movie in recent memory – seriously – the entire crowd roared with laughter, which was a nice thing to experience again.

Reenergised (to a degree) but certainly nothing new in that regard. It’s a film where you disengage your brain and enjoy and there’s no better way to see it than on IMAX screens with CGI robotic sequence oozing with quality and vibrance on the big IMAX screens and matched with the top end audio these films (despite their flaws) really are the big screen experience in every sense of the word.

Our Rating

Summary
Renergised to the point where it doesn’t feel like franchise fatigue is setting in but there’s still a long way to go before Transformers gets back on its feet and becomes enjoyable again but this is certainly a good step in the right direction.
