The Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Trailer Leans Into Indy’s Age

Dec 22, 2022

“Those days are come and gone,” Indiana Jones says of his old adventures in the new trailer for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. “Perhaps, perhaps not,” says his old friend Sallah.
Perhaps definitely not? The new trailer finds Dr. Jones — played by an 80-year-old Harrison Ford — quite convincingly jumping, fighting and whiplashing his way through a new adventure set at least partly in what looks to be the New York City of the 1960s. Sallah (John Rhys-Davies) is trying to lure Indy back for one last mission, involving Indy’s goddaughter (Phoebe Waller-Bridge). Whatever Sallah says must be pretty convincing, from the looks of the explosions, shootouts and car-chases that permeate the trailer.  You can watch here or above.

The film is the latest in a run of projects for Harrison Ford, including the new Yellowstone spinoff 1923, coming this month, and the Apple TV+ comedy Shrinking, due out next month.
The trailer promisingly revisits the theme of science vs. faith that has fueled the best Indiana Jones movies,  going back to Raiders of the Lost Ark, 41 years ago. “I don’t believe in magic,” Dr. Jones tells us in the trailer. “But a few times in my life I’ve seen things — things I can’t explain. And I’ve come to believe it’s not so much what you believe. It’s how hard you believe.”
The film is the first film in the franchise not to be directed by Steven Spielberg. New director James Mangold (Ford vs. Ferrari) reteams with Boyd Holbrook, with whom he also worked in 2017’s Logan. That film, like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, features an action icon — Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine — in the later years of his life.
Mangold has said Harrison Ford will be de-aged for parts of Dial of Destiny. (Just as Jackman was both aged up and de-aged for different parts of Logan.) But Dr. Jones has always been an underdog, scraping by despite a slew of disadvantages, and age may be just yet another inconvenience as he embarks on what Harrison Ford promises will be his last mission. Indiana Jones has always won the day not with brawn, but heart, which is ageless. You just have to believe hard enough.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny arrives in theaters on June 30, 2023.
