January is going to be slightly busier than normal. With the SAG and WGA strikes currently still ongoing, it was only a matter of time before the Television Academy and this year’s Emmy broadcast partner, FOX, moved the ceremony out of its originally scheduled Sept. 19th berth. It’s only slightly surprising the telecast will now occur four months later on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, January 15.

That date pushes the Emmys off its usual Sunday slot but makes sense with NFL playoff games in effect that weekend. That being said, the telecast will still go up against an NFL wildcard game on ABC and ESPN. Not ideal for an awards ceremony hoping to increase its ratings for its 75th anniversary.
The telecast will still originate from the Peacock Theater (formerly the Microsoft Theater) at LA Live. Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon, and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay are still on board to produce the event. No host has been announced at this time.
More intriguing is the ceremony conflicts for the Creative Arts Emmys. The Television Academy announced those ceremonies, which are not broadcast live, will occur at the Peacock Theater at LA Live over two consecutive nights on Saturday, January 6, and Sunday, January 7. An edited presentation will be aired Saturday, January 13 at 8:00 PM EST/PST on FXX. Currently, the Golden Globe Awards are set for January 7. With both award bodies handing out television prizes there may be some tough choices of which ceremony to attend.
Additionally, the Primetime Emmy Awards will occur the day after the 2024 Critics Choice Awards which will take place on Sunday, Jan. 14. The fact the Emmys occur the day after means the Critics Choice telecast may benefit from more “stars” being in town than previous years.
Voting for the 2023 Emmys will still occur this month. Ballots will be available for Television Academy members beginning on August 17. Voting will close at 10 PM on August 28.
