Minx Canceled at HBO Despite Season 2 Renewal
Dec 27, 2022
The second season of the well-received sitcom was currently in production.
HBO Max
Despite a second season renewal in May, HBO Max has decided not to move forward with Minx. The sitcom, starring Jake Johnson and Ophelia Lovibond, joins a list of cancelations that have resulted from the recent WarnerMedia and Discovery merger. While Minx’s future with the streamer is no more, there is still some hope that the series will live on, as Lionsgate, the studio behind Minx, is shopping the series to other platforms and networks. In a statement, Lionsgate TV said:
“We have enjoyed a good partnership with HBO Max and are working closely to find a new opportunity for Minx, so current, and new viewers, can continue this journey with us.”
The first season of Minx opened to positive reviews and the series was renewed just one month after its series premiere. Minx follows the story of Joyce (Lovibond) a young feminist living in California in the 1970s with dreams of publishing her own magazine: The Matriarchy Awakens. In an effort to make her dream a reality, she ventures out to the 1971 Southern California Magazine Pitch Festival where she meets Dough (Johnson). Doug, a porn-publisher, is eager to create the first erotic magazine for women. The two join forces, much to Joyce’s dismay, and the result is Minx: a magazine with feminist articles and pictures of naked men. Minx is reportedly based loosely on the creation of Playgirl.

Season one of I also starred Idara Victor, Jessica Lowe, Lennon Parham, Michael Angarano and Oscar Montoya. Minx was created by Ellen Rapoport, who also served as showrunner and an executive producer. Pail Feig and Dan Magnante for Feigco Entertainment, Ben Karlin and Rachel Lee Goldenberg also served as executive producers, with Johnson on board as co-executive producer.

Minx Joins Large List of Merger Casualties
Season 2 of Minx was well into production, with TVLine reporting that its second season was “nearing completion.” If the series does indeed find a new home, audiences can expect to see the addition of Elizabeth Perkins (Weeds) in a recurring role.
The merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery was completed earlier this year. Their new joint portfolio includes Discovery Channel, Warner Bros. Entertainment, CNN, HBO, Cartoon Network, HBO Max, and Discovery+. Series cancelations, including Minx, Raised by Wolves, Gordita Chronicles, and FBoy Island, among others, come as Warner Bros. Discovery told investors they would find over $3 billion in cost savings. If Minx is able to follow in the footsteps of TBS’ Chad, which was canceled after filming for its second season had wrapped but was then picked up by Roku, viewers may get to see what the Minx crew gets into next.
