Charlize Theron Talks Aging In Hollywood, Double Standards

In a new interview with Allure, the 48-year-old Academy Award–winning actor reflected on getting older in the public eye, while also addressing if she’s had any professional work done to her face.

“My face is changing, and I love that my face is changing and aging,” Charlize told Allure. “People think I had a facelift.”

“They’re like, ‘What did she do to her face?’ I’m like, ‘Bitch, I’m just aging! It doesn’t mean I got bad plastic surgery. This is just what happens.’”

But just because Charlize hasn’t gone under the knife, that doesn’t mean she’s shaming anyone who has gone down that route. In fact, she believes society needs to be a little more “empathetic” to every woman’s aging journey.

“I’ve always had issues with the fact that men kind of age like fine wines and women like cut flowers,” Charlize said about the double standards women face. “I despise that concept and I want to fight against it.”

“But I also think women want to age in a way that feels right to them. We need to be a little bit more empathetic to how we all go through our journey.”

But there is one thing about aging that Charlize wishes she could change: the decline of flexibility and mobility in her body.

“More than my face, I wish I had my 25-year-old body that I can just throw against the wall and not even hurt tomorrow,” Charlize added. “Now, if I don’t work out for three days and I go back to the gym, I can’t walk.”

To learn more about Charlize, her views on aging, and what she’ll never do for a role again, be sure to check out her full interview with Allure.
