‘Loki’ Writer Says Series Didn’t Have Any Reshoots After Jonathan Majors Controversy
Oct 3, 2023
It’s been a little over two years since “Loki” Season 1 ended. And that ending is still one of the most surprising in recent MCU history, introducing He Who Remains (played by Jonathan Majors), one of the various variants of Kang the Conqueror. At the time, it was incredibly exciting, as it really did mark the true beginning of what is now the next chapter in the MCU saga. However, over the past year, there have been questions about that ending, notably, what would happen with “Loki” Season 2 (and the future of the MCU) given Majors’ recent domestic violence allegations and legal issues. Well, according to the head writer of Season 2 of “Loki,” no matter what happens with Majors’ personal life, his role in the series was never in jeopardy.

In a new interview with Variety, as we are only days away from the premiere of “Loki” Season 2, head writer Eric Martin talked about Jonathan Majors’ involvement in the series. That is to say, he refuted any claims that Marvel Studios was rushing to change the episodes and possibly recast Majors after his legal issues.
For those who are a bit confused by this, let’s give the situation a bit more context. After “Loki” Season 1 ended with the introduction of Majors as He Who Remains (aka Kang), Marvel Studios tripled down on the actor as the new “big bad” of this new chapter of the MCU. He appeared in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and he was teased as the villain of Season 2 of Loki, as well as having his own ‘Avengers’ film, titled ‘Kang Dynasty.’ Needless to say, Majors is a, uh, major part of the MCU moving forward. So, when the actor was arrested and charged with domestic violence and awaiting a trial, many assumed that Marvel would do some tricky multiversal recasting and replace Majors, given his uncertain status in the future. Well, according to Martin, that is not anywhere close to the truth.

“No. This is maybe — not maybe — this is the first Marvel series to never have any additional photography,” said Martin about reshooting parts of “Loki” Season 2 to deal with Majors’ current situation. “The story that is on screen is the story we set out to make. We went out there with a very specific idea of what we wanted this to be, and we found a way to tell it in that production period. It’s very much what’s on screen on Disney+.”
As for recasting the role in Season 2, Martin said it was far too soon to even consider such a huge decision.
“No. And that mainly came from — I know as much as you do at the moment,” he said. “It felt hasty to do anything without knowing how all of this plays out.”
Does this mean Majors will continue in the role for the entire run of the next several years of MCU films? No. However, it definitely stands to reason that Marvel is willing to sit back and watch it all play out. Perhaps, once given his day in court, Majors will be found not guilty, and he will be less of a liability moving forward. Of course, that doesn’t take into account the court of public opinion, who see Majors as an alleged abuser. And we all know Disney/Marvel Studios wouldn’t want to build the next story of the biggest franchise of all time around someone who is that radioactive.
All that to say, we shall see. “Loki” Season 2, with Jonathan Majors, debuts on Disney+ on October 5.
