Sylvester Stallone Grapples Regret & Reflects On Life In Retrospective Netflix Doc Coming In November
Oct 18, 2023
Arnold Schwarzenegger recently got the Netflix doc treatment, Sylvester Stallone is next, and hell, maybe Bruce Willis is after that for a triumvirate of the action gods of the 1980s and 90s. We’re getting ahead of ourselves, for now, Netflix is getting ready to release “Sly,” a new Stallone documentary from Thom Zimny, the doc filmmaker behind “Springsteen on Broadway,” and “The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town.”

The cliché of Stallone is he’s a thick-headed action jock, but as this trailer reminds us, he wrote “Rocky” as a vehicle for himself when he was a hungry young artist, and that went on to receive 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Screenplay and Best Actor for Stallone and went on to win Best Picture, Best Directing and Best Editing. That not only launched the “Rocky” franchise, it ended up launching his directing career; Stallone directed “Rocky II,” “Rocky III” and ‘IV,’ and dozens of other movies like the “Saturday Night Fever” sequel, “Staying Alive,” “Rambo” “The Expendables” and more.
Moreover, he comes across as a really thoughtful guy, and the trailer’s theme is arguably regret. Stallone achieved much, but it came at a significant personal cost.
For nearly 50 years, Sylvester Stallone has entertained millions with iconic characters and blockbuster franchises, from Rocky to Rambo to The Expendables. This retrospective documentary offers an intimate look at the Oscar-nominated actor-writer-director-producer, paralleling his inspirational underdog story with the indelible characters he has brought to life.
“Sly” made its world premiere when it was chosen as the Closing Night Gala film at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year and will be released globally on Netflix on November 3. Watch the new trailer below.
