Here’s Why Mister Mind Isn’t in Shazam!: Fury of the Gods

Jan 5, 2023

Director David F. Sandberg took to Instagram Q&A to answer a fan query explaining Mister Mind’s absence in the movie.

Shazam!: Fury of the Gods is eyeing a 2023 release after years of production and delays. The direct sequel to Shazam! (2019), the film will feature Zachary Levi’s and Asher Angel’s Billy Batson face-off Kalypso and Hespera along with the rest of his Shazam family. But, earlier in the first film, DC Comics villain Mister Mind made a cameo appearance, hinting at him taking over the antagonist role in the future. But, the sequel won’t feature the character and instead will have the daughters of Atlas as primary villains. The decision has since confused a faction of fans hoping for Mister Mind to appear in the movie.

In a recent Instagram Q&A, director David F. Sandberg clarified his decision to leave Mister Mind out of the sequel. When a fan asked why he chose to go for Kalypso and Hespera instead of the psychic archnemesis to Shazam, the director revealed that after several discussions, it turned out that Mister Mind would make Fury of the Gods “too much movie.”

Sandberg wrote:

Early on, we did explore having Mister Mind be a big part of this story, but it would have been too much movie. Even without him, we had t cut things down to fit it all into one movie.

In the comics, Mister Mind is the archnemesis of Shazam. The character is a two-inch alien worm who possesses high intelligence and telepathic powers. In Shazam!, Mister Mind is captive of Wizard Shazam at Rock of Eternity but later escapes when Doctor Sivana attacks the Wizard. He later visits Sivana in his prison and suggests an alliance and his intent to enslave the Seven Realms. Interestingly, director David F. Sandberg voiced the CGI character himself in the movie.

Shazam’s Future In DC Extended Universe

Warner Bros.

The sequel to Shazam! came in shape after several years of development delays and the added halts due to the pandemic. Shazam!: Fury of the Gods’ first trailer was released at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego. Shazam’s storyline has an uncertain future in the DC Extended Universe as of now. Besides the sequel, the film’s spin-off Black Adam is also slated to release this year. Post Fury of the Gods, Shazam’s status in the franchise will depend on how The Flash reboots DCEU and how the character will further fit in Warner Bros. Discovery’s new ten-year plan.

With Mister Mind still hatching some evil plan in the DCEU, it’s possible for him to return for the threequel. There is a massive collection of stories from DC Comics featuring Shazam that can take shape in a live-action format. And given that Shazam! is DCEU’s one of the most critically acclaimed productions, the humorous kid-adult superhero could build up some decent rapport for the collapsing shared continuity of DC Comics characters.

Shazam!: Fury of the Gods will release on March 17, 2023. The film’s release date has been changed several times, and it was earlier scheduled to release in December 2022. But Warner Bros.’ new marketing strategies have pushed major DCEU releases, including Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom. Besides Levi and Angel, the film will see Jack Dylan Grazer, Adam Brody, Ross Butler, Ian Chen, Meagan Good, Faithe Herman, Grace Fulton, and D.J. Cotrona reprising their respective roles from the first film while Rachel Zegler, Lucy Liu, and Helen Mirren will round up the additional cast.
