Kurt Russell and Son Wyatt Name Each Other’s Roles They’d Like to Play

Summary
In an exclusive interview, Kurt Russell was asked which of his son’s roles he’d like to play an older version of and vice versa. Wyatt Russell expressed interest in playing the son of his father’s character in Used Cars. Kurt would like to tackle Wyatt’s character in the Black Mirror episode Playtest.
Father and son Kurt and Wyatt Russell traverse the monstrous world of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on Apple TV+. In the Godzilla-based series, which exists in Legendary’s MonsterVerse, the Russells portray the past and present versions of the same character, Lee Shaw. And in an exclusive interview with MovieWeb, Wyatt was asked if there was ever a role played by his father that he’d like to portray the younger version of. Wyatt said:
For me, I love Used Cars. I think it’s one of my favorite movies. And like playing the son of Rudy Russo would probably be pretty fun. I don’t know what that would look like, but I would… I would do that.
Co-writer and director Robert Zemeckis’ Used Cars is a 1980 film, which stars Russell as a hilariously disreputable used cars salesman, Rudy Russo. The satirical comedy, which also co-stars Jack Warden, is an often-overlooked gem and trusting Rudy Russo isn’t always easy to do — but it’s hilarious all the same to watch.
Naturally, for Kurt, his son’s performance as John Walker in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier came up when it was dad’s turn to pick a role played by his son that he’d like to try on for size. Wyatt brought the U.S. Agent, aka Walker, to life in a way few actors could have surpassed. And Kurt himself pondered how he’d approach the part. Russell said:
The Captain America who’s not the right one. And do it with some aplomb and some nuance. I don’t know.

Russell Reversal
Apple TV+
Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell were asked which of their roles the other would like to try and tackle: Kurt playing a younger version of one of Wyatt’s parts and vice versa. And while Kurt did reference the MCU’s corrupt answer to Chris Evans’ virtuous Captain America, the father would be hesitant to try and play Sean Dudley, aka “Dud,” from Lodge 49. The elder Russell told MovieWeb:
“He’s been asked quite a few times to play, you know, to do versions of some of the characters that I had the pleasure of creating. Now, I think I’d be too intimidated, to be honest with you. I just can’t imagine myself being able to pull off Dud.”
Wyatt responded:
That’s definitely not true.
For those not familiar with Jim Gavin’s AMC dramedy series, Lodge 49 is a hilarious look at what outwardly appears to be a younger version of The Dude from The Big Lebowski. But Wyatt brings a more sophisticated and intelligent approach to his one-time surfer character, Dud, and how the lost soul goes from wandering after his dad’s death to trying to find himself once opportunity hilariously presents itself. In the end, though, Kurt would settle on tackling another of Wyatt’s roles entirely. Kurt said:
I think the one character would be the guy in Black Mirror. I might want to give that a shot.
During the third season of the sci-fi anthology series, Black Mirror, Wyatt portrays Cooper Redfield in the episode titled Playtest. And one wonders what Kurt’s approach to the thrill-seeking character would have been given his years of acting acumen. Kurt and Wyatt Russell can currently be seen starring together as the young and older versions of Lee Shaw in the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and new episodes stream every Friday.
