George R. R. Martin has been keeping fans waiting for his Winds of Winter novel for almost as long as it took the Game of Thrones series to debut and air its final, controversial, episodes. While updating his most recent blog post, Martin once again noted that Winds of Winter is still coming, but also shed some light on how recent changes at Warner Bros. Discovery impacted a number of Game of Thrones spin-off shows.
Following the end of Game of Thrones, which did not exactly end on a high note with many fans, there were up to seven spin-off shows being considered for development. Since then, House of the Dragon has aired its first season, which seemed to go a little way to undoing the disappointment of the Game of Thrones finale, but there has been little word on further spin-offs. On the subject, Martin wrote:
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
“Now I am back in the salt mine, working… working on so many bloody things, my head may soon explode. Yes, Winds of Winter, yes, yes. And House of the Dragon, Season 2. And several of the other successor shows that we’re developing with HBO. (Some of those are moving faster than others, as is always the case with development. None have been greenlit yet, though we are hoping… maybe soon. A couple have been shelved, but I would not agree that they are dead. You can take something off the shelf as easily as you can put it on the shelf. All the changes at HBO Max have impacted us, certainly).”

Will HBO’s Jon Snow Spin-Off Make It To Production?
Warner Bros. Television Distribution
Of the many potential Game of Thrones spin-offs that have been pitched and are currently either abandoned or in limbo, one that appears to be possibly moving forward is a Jon Snow sequel series. For many fans, the story of Jon Snow was done and dusted by the end of Game of Thrones’ final episode, but that hasn’t stopped many being excited about seeing the return of Kit Harington’s popular character. Previously Martin said of the potential spin-off:
“Yes, there is a Jon Snow show in development… Our working title for the show is SNOW… SNOW has been in development almost as long as the other three, but for whatever reason it was never announced and it never leaked… until now. But, yes, it is true. This was not an official announcement from HBO, so it seems there was another leak… There’s not much more I can tell you, not until HBO gives me a green light.”
Since then, there has been no official announcement or any further details on what the series could entail. With Warner Bros. Discovery having gone through much upheaval recently, it seems that this has been one of the sources of the delays seen in the continuation of the franchise. For now, the same fans who have waited so many years for Martin to continue his novels are now also waiting endlessly for news of how the TV franchise will move forward as well.
