AppleTV+’s 8-episode television series, Pachinko, which documented the annexation of Korea, will be honored at this year’s Critics Choice Awards.

In December 2022, the Critics’ Choice Award committee announced its list of 2023 nominees. Among the nominees is the historical drama series Pachinko, which is nominated for Best Foreign Language Series, according to a report from Forbes.

Based on the New York Times best-selling novel by author Min Jin Lee, Apple TV+’s Pachinko is a fictional tale about the Japan-Korea annexation. The show is a fictional portrayal of a native Korean girl named Sunja as well as generations of her family as they navigate life under Japanese rule. The series stars up-and-coming actress Kim Min Ha as young Sunja, Oscar-winning actress Young Yuh-jung as older Sunja, and Hallyu star Lee Min Ho as Sunja’s love interest Hansu.

The series, written and produced by Soo Hugh, is told in 8 parts and spans several pivotal decades in Korea and Japan under the latter’s rule. Season 2 of Pachinko is already in the works and is set to air on AppleTV+ sometime in 2023.

In season one of Pachinko, audiences were introduced to Sunja. Sunja is a poor Korean girl who is forced to navigate life under a Japanese dictatorship when the appearance of a handsome stranger suddenly changes her entire world. That stranger is Hansu, a mysterious and wealthy Korean businessman who has earned respect from fellow Koreans and Japanese alike. Sunja soon falls for Hansu’s devious charms and is left to pick up the pieces of her life when she gets pregnant with his baby. Later, Sunja leaves her homeland to reside in the slums of Japan, where she is forced to survive in a hostile environment. Subsequent scenes show young and old Sunja and her family facing trials and tribulations as they struggle to adapt in a foreign land.

Season 2 of Pachinko promises more drama as the show’s screenwriter, Soo Hugh, states that World War II will be portrayed. Hugh added in an interview that Sunja’s children, Mozasu and Noah, will play a more significant part in the next season. In addition to those characters, Sunja’s grandchild Solomon — whom audiences last saw experience an internal struggle in choosing between his lust for money and power and filial obedience — will have to deal with the aftermath of his decisions in season 2. Audiences should anticipate that season two will premiere in the spring of 2023, partly because season one aired in the same season. However, no specific date has been revealed yet. In the meantime, Pachinko season one is currently streaming on AppleTV+.
