Another year, another massive slate of brand-new content on Netflix. So what does the streamer have in store for its subscribers this year? On the YA front, one of Netflix’s biggest showcases for 2023 is “Lockwood & Co.,” based on Jonathan Shroud‘s hit book series from the 2010s.

Set in London, “Lockwood & Co.” follows a threesome of teenagers who start an amateur ghosthunting agency. Soon enough, their exploits thrust them into a high-stakes spectral mystery.
Here’s the official synopsis, courtesy of Netflix:
In London, where the most gifted teenage ghost-hunters venture nightly into perilous combat with deadly spirits, amidst the many corporate, adult-run agencies, one stands alone: independent of any commercial imperative or adult supervision – a tiny startup, run by two teenage boys and a newly arrived, supremely psychically gifted girl, a renegade trio destined to unravel a mystery that will change the course of history: Lockwood & Co.
“Lockwood & Co.” stars Ruby Stokes, Paddy Holland, Bobby Vernon, and Morven Christie. The series also stars Luke Treadaway, Ivanno Jeremiah, Ali Hadji-Heshmati, Rhianna Dorris, and Hayley Konadu. Guest appearances include Jack Bandeira, Ishtar Currie Wilson, and Jemma Moore.
“Ant-Man” co-writer Joe Cornish serves as showrunner for “Lockwood & Co.” He also directs the show’s first episode. It’s Cornish’s first directorial effort since 2019’s “The Kid Who Would Be King,” another YA effort. William McGregor also directs several episodes of the series. Writers Ed Hime, Kara Smith, and Joy Wilkinson adapt Shroud’s books to the series format.
So which way will “Lockheed & Co.” go for Netflix? Is this a future YA hit for the streamer, or will it get canceled after one season like many of its YA adaptations? Fans of the book series, take note: the new series premieres on Netflix on January 27. Watch a trailer for it below.
