The Batman Wins Plagiarism Court Battle as Judge Finds in Favor of Matt Reeves & Warner Bros.

Apr 2, 2024

Summary

The Batman
has faced plagiarism accusations that have now been dismissed by a judge.
The film was praised for its detective angle, exploring The Dark Knight’s skills while paying homage to classic thrillers.

The Batman Part 2
was recently delayed to October 2026.

The delay in the production of its sequel is not the only conflict surrounding The Batman. The 2022 film directed by Matt Reeves was recently accused of plagiarism, but a judge has now ultimately ruled in favor of the director and Warner Bros. Entertainment. The movie starring Robert Pattinson was one of DC’s greatest hits on the big screen in recent years, to the point that it managed to survive the reboot that James Gunn is now carrying out. The film, which pays tribute to classic thrillers such as Seven and Zodiac, was very well received by fans for exploring the skills of The Dark Knight as a detective.

However, the story, or at least its supposed originality, was not well received by everyone. A few months after its debut in theaters, the studio was accused of plagiarism by Christopher Wozniak, an artist and writer of comic books for DC. According to him, Reeves and Warner had copied his work “The Ultimate Riddle” word for word. Fortunately for the studio and the director, U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer has now ruled in their favor, dismissing Wozniak’s allegations.

Related The Batman: Part 2: What We Hope to See in the Sequel In spite of the delay, The Batman 2 is well worth the wait, with an exciting story ahead of it. Here’s what we’d like to see in the sequel.

For the judge, there are no alarming similarities between both stories, but rather, the film is just another adaptation of the character’s adventures (via Reuters), and that the plot of detectives chasing a killer/criminal who is always one step ahead of them is too common to sustain the accusations.

To make matters worse, the judge accused Wozniak himself of violating DC/WB copyright laws:

“The story’s use of the Batman character and the surrounding protected elements is an act of clear and blatant copyright infringement.”

What to Expect from The Batman Part 2
The Batman Part II Release Date October 3, 2025 Studio DC Films and Warner Bros. Franchise DC

The Batman Part Two is one of the many films that has been affected by the strikes that put Hollywood on pause during 2023. The film was initially going to be released in October 2025, and has been delayed a full year, which will give it time for Reeves to work on the script and better connect it with The Penguin, which premieres this year on Max.

Therefore, the plot details of the sequel are difficult to guess, although it is known that Barry Keoghan will return as the Joker, although that does not mean that he will be the main villain. Surely there is a new enemy that Batman will have to face. In the first film, we saw Bruce Wayne taking his first steps as the hero of Gotham City, so in the second part we will find a more mature character, who has learned important lessons. We will surely see him spend more time outside his mansion, while he continues fighting crime in the shadows.

The Penguin will leave quite a few clues about what Reeves will present in The Batman Part Two, and Robert Pattinson may even make a surprise appearance in the show, even if it is in an episode or a short scene.

The Batman Part II
is now scheduled to be released in the United States on October 2, 2026.
