She-Hulk Team Explains Delivering the Finale’s Big ‘F-You’ to Trolls

Dec 8, 2022

She-Hulk’s finale gave a lengthy swipe at toxic fans and online trolls, and the team behind the show loved every minute of bringing it to screen.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law has divided many Marvel fans, with its comedic core and throwaway storylines, and the finale didn’t disappoint in creating more debate between the show’s fans and critics. With a big reveal at the end of the series being the biggest Meta moment of the MCU, She-Hulk took a thinly-veiled swipe at the many complaints that have been aimed at Marvel over the last few years, and it was something the team behind the show were thrilled to do.

She-Hulk has come under fire even more than other Marvel shows, being called out over its CGI, story, use of Daredevil…the list goes on. However, in the series finale, Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Walters broke the fourth wall in a new way. After leaving her own show and heading to seek out “Kevin”, Jen wound up speaking with K.E.V.I.N, an AI robot that, in the context of the show, is responsible for creating the storylines that follow rules such as delivering a big finale, tying up loose ends and teasing future projects. However, this scene also leads to a long conversation about how sometimes there are budgets to be considered, certain characters may not be available and you can’t please everyone, which is effectively Marvel telling fans to just enjoy what they do or move on.

When it comes to delivering that scene and its message, writer Jessica Gao told Variety:

“That conversation between Jen and K.E.V.I.N. is very much the relationship that I have with real-life Kevin and a lot of that is taken from conversations I’ve had with him. That scene was so much longer in the scripts. If they had let me, I probably would have written a 10-minute conversation of my avatar arguing with Kevin. This is probably the tightest version of what it could have been. There were a couple of jabs where Kevin was like, “OK, this is a little mean now.”
Our writers room opened three years ago. The fact that we were able to predict what the reaction was going to be, what a lot of the trolling comments were going to be, really shows how very tired and unoriginal these trolls are. That really tickled me because the little troll that lives inside of me really loves trolling the trolls.”

Tatiana Maslany Always Expected Trolls To Come After She-Hulk

Marvel Studios

It is not unusual for any series or movie to receive its fair share of troll comments on social media, and She-Hulk was hit with many over its nine episode run. However, Tatiana Maslany was more than aware of how some people would react to the show, and it was all fine with her to really give them something to complain about with the series. She said:

“Jessica Gao is a genius and knows about the culture we’re living in and her position in it when she’s writing these stories about a woman superhero. She knows what that response is going to be. As a cast, it was delightful sending each other these troll responses, like “Oh my god, give them a week and then they’re going to literally see this pop up verbatim in the show and become the villains of the show.” It was thrilling.
Reading the script, it was so true. There’s so much resistance to a woman just existing in that space of superheroes. There’s always going to be that. I sort of anticipated it. It’s why I also feel it’s important. There’s such an entitlement to space held by certain people, and to even exist as She-Hulk is like a f*ck-you, and I love that.”
