Some Fans Have Just Realized Ms. Thornhill Star Played Wednesday 30 Years Ago

Dec 10, 2022

Despite being seeminly well reported, some fans are only just realizing that Christina Ricci appears in Wednesday as Ms Thornhill.

Netflix

It seems that there has been no secret made about Christina Ricci’s roles as Miss Thornhill in Netflix’s Wednesday. Despite this, there seems to be a lot of people who are only now realizing that the Nevermore Academy teacher previously played the role of Wednesday in 1991’s The Addams Family and its 1993 sequel. The 90s movies have become one the most popular iterations of the family put on screen, and the cast, including Ricci, became synonymous with the characters. That obviously has led to plenty of comparisons between the movies and Netflix’s new series.

Wednesday is a completely new take on The Addams Family, and one that has certainly struck a chord with fans. The show puts the Addams’ daughter at the center of the story, which is a dark and twisting mystery involving monsters, murder and family secrets. This had seen the series landing a hugely superior Rotten Tomatoes score to those of all Addams Family releases other than the original 60s TV show.

Now with many people having binge-watched their way through the new series, some are only just realizing that Ms. Thornhill, or more precisely the actress behind her, has already been an iconic part of the franchise. Check out some of the comments made on Twitter below:

Jenna Ortega Didn’t Want To Get Advice From Christina Ricci

Paramount Pictures / Columbia Pictures

While it would seem that asking a predecessor about how to play a character would be a no brainier for some actors, but Jenna Ortega didn’t want to end up just repeating Ricci’s version of Wednesday. It seems that turned out to be the best thing, as her performance in the title role has been highly praised even by those who have not entirely gelled with the show. Ortega previously commented on focusing on her own portrayal of the iconic character, saying:

“I think when she was on set, neither one of us said Wednesday once to each other. I think because she knew not to say anything to me… I don’t think she wanted to get in the way of my performance and feel like she was overbearing. And I felt like I didn’t want to pull up something that she did 30 years ago. For one, the sake of my own benefit, but two, yeah, I didn’t want to rip her off, and I didn’t want to be too much like her. I think our show has superpowers, and outcasts, and evil ghost pilgrims. They’re two very different people, our Wednesdays, I think.”

Wednesday has delivered everything it promised and more to most fans, and that means that there is a high expectation of a second season getting the green light soon. With the series showrunners also hinting at potential spin-offs being discussed, this could be the start of whole new Addams Family universe. For now, the entire first season of Wednesday is streaming on Netflix in its entirety.
