X-Men ’97 season two is on the way, and fans can hopefully expect it sooner rather than later, according to the series executive producer. X-Men ’97 turned out to be one of the biggest surprises from Marvel Studios in some time, and while fans were excited about the revival of the popular animated series, it quickly became must-watch programming as it hooked audiences with its incredible writing, gorgeous animation, and complex characters. X-Men ’97became the event Marvel television series that the MCU has been craving.

Following the season one cliffhanger, fans have been hoping for updates on X-Men ’97 season two, and it sounds like it is coming along nicely. Brad Winderbaum, head of television at Marvel, joined The Offical Marvel Podcast and spoke about many of their upcoming television series, from Wonder Man to Agatha All Along and, of course, X-Men ’97. Winderbaum said on the podcast that he has seen the animatics for the season and thinks it will be just as good as the first season. He said:

“We’ve got big plans for the second season. I’ve already seen all the animatics and we’re well on our way to creating something that hits the heights of the first season. I know the first season is an emotional ride; that ride continues in a very X-Men fashion in the second season.”

What Do We Know About X-Men ‘97 Season 2?

X-Men ’97 season one ended with the tease that the X-Men were lost across time, with half of the characters in Egypt during the early days of En Sabah Nur/Apocalypse while the others were transported to the far future and encountered an older version of Rachel Summers and the child version of Nathan Summers/Cable. Combine that with the mid-credit scene of Apocalypse in Genosha picking up Gambit’s playing card, and it appears season two of X-Men ’97 will be all about the popular X-Men villain Apocalypse, adapting many iconic storylines including Age of Apocalypse, The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix, and Rise of Apocalypse.

In terms of when fans will see the series, that is another question. Due to the extended nature of animation, there is a chance that X-Men ’97 could have a two-year gap between its first and second seasons, similar to What If…? Yet it was confirmed that work on X-Men ’97 season two began shortly after season one finished, so the turnaround time could be much shorter. And, with how well X-Men ’97 was received, getting season two out is likely a top priority for Marvel and Disney+.

So, there is a chance the series could be ready for 2025. There is a three-month gap between Captain America: Brave New World opening in February 2025 and Thunderbolts in May 2025, which would be the perfect window for X-Men ’97 season two. There is then a four-month gap between The Fantastic Four and Blade (and that is under the assumption Blade even makes its November release date following its recent director departure), meaning X-Men ’97 season two could premiere during the fall or even be Marvel Studios’ big holiday release for Disney+.

It is also worth noting the creative team of X-Men ’97 season two will be slightly different. X-Men ’97 showrunner Beau De Mayo was suddenly fired from the series the day before the red carpet premiere and has said he is not actively involved in season two’s development. On June 7, 2024, X-Men ’97 story editor and supervising producer Charley Feldman spoke to The Reel Rejects in a deep dive for X-Men ’97 and said they were not contracted to work on X-Men ’97 season two either.

While two lead creative voices from the series are now gone, there are still plenty of great, talented writers and artists who worked on X-Men ’97 that are still attached to the series, and it has the potential to be just as great as the first season.
