EXCLUSIVE: “This is not a making-of, but more of an insight about how the Cowboy fell asleep and woke up in Copenhagen.” And with that, filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn introduces you to “Copenhagen Cowboy: Nightcall with Nicolas Winding Refn,” a new behind-the-scenes documentary about the production of his new series, “Copenhagen Cowboy,” which is available on Netflix globally now.
‘Copenhagen Cowboy: Nightcall’ debuts on Netflix worldwide on Tuesday, January 31, but we’ve got an exclusive early debut of the entire thirty-minute doc right now, below.

An enigmatic, evocative arty noir-thriller, “Copenhagen Cowboy” follows the young woman Miu (Angela Bundalovic), a renegade who pursues vengeance while navigating her way through Copenhagen’s criminal underworld. The six-part series mixes fantasy, horror, adventure, and fairy tales into a delirious froth of neon-soaked action, drama, and patented Refn surreality. (Read our review here.)
“Copenhagen Cowboy” also stars Lola Corfixen, Zlatko Burić (“Triangle of Sadness”), Jason Hendil-Forssell, Li Ii Zhang and Andrea Lykke Jørgensen, and many more.
Here’s the official synopsis of the doc, which takes us into a deeper sneak peek at the series, Refn’s influences, the cast, his intentions, and more.
The “Copenhagen Cowboy: Nightcall with Nicolas Winding Refn” is a half-hour neon-drenched behind-the-scenes documentary about the production of Copenhagen Cowboy. It features show creator Nicolas Winding Refn (“Drive”) as well as cast members Angela Bundalovic (“The Rain”), Lola Corfixen, and Zlatko Buric (“Triangle of Sadness”), among many others.
In the doc, Refn reveals that his original pitch for “Copenhagen Cowboy” was an extension of his Danish “Pusher” trilogy, but “there was going to be a spaceship.” While it deviated off that path, and there are no UFOs in the final “Copenhagen Cowboy” product, the spirit of that strangeness certainly remains throughout Refn’s expressive and striking series, which hints at ghosts and many mystical elements, and transcends realism.
The ‘Nightcall’ documentary goes deep into the background of ‘Copenhagen Cowboy’ and gives us insights into Refn and his crew’s inspirations for the show: fairy tales, “Joan of Arc,” neon lights, tracksuits, family members, street casting, throbbing electro music and much more.
“Copenhagen Cowboy: Nightcall With Nicolas Winding Refn” debuts January 31 on Netflix, or watch the entire doc exclusively now right here below.
