TV Networks Plan Special Coverage Sunday After Trump Rally Shooting
Jul 15, 2024
The major TV news outlets are planning special coverage on Sunday, following a shooting at one of former President Donald Trump‘s rallies that left the presumptive Republican nominee wounded but OK.
The former president’s campaign said Trump was “fine” after being rushed off the stage in Butler, Pennsylvania, when gunfire erupted. Trump posted that he was hit in the upper part of his right ear. The shooting is being investigated as an attempted assassination on Trump, law enforcement officials told the Associated Press. A local prosecutor said the suspected gunman and at least one attendee are dead.
The White House said that President Joe Biden spoke to former President Trump Saturday evening.
While the event unfolded live on TV (broadcast networks jumped in with special reports minutes after the event unfolded, with Secret Service agents surrounding the president and leading him off the stage), the networks indicated late Saturday night that the shooting will dominate their coverage on Sunday.
CBS said that it is preempting CBS Sunday Morning, with anchor John Dickerson instead set to host a live special from 9-10:30 a.m.
NBC says that it will have Savannah Guthrie and Willie Geist anchoring a special edition of Today on Sunday morning. On Saturday night, MSNBC simulcast NBC News coverage, which was led by Lester Holt.
ABC News planned a special edition of Good Morning America, led by its weekday hosts Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos and Michael Strahan.
On cable, Fox News says that it will have continuous live coverage overnight with Eric Shawn, Arthel Neville and Trace Gallagher, with Fox & Friends set to begin an hour early at 5 a.m. Co-host Lawrence Jones will report live from Butler. Live coverage will continue throughout the morning.
Fox also said that anchor Harris Faulkner interviewed Trump earlier in the day before the shooting took place, and will release those videos when available.
