Fireline Featured, Reviews Film Threat

Aug 9, 2024

HOLLYSHORTS FILM FESTIVAL 2024 REVIEW! Dedicated to the incarcerated wildland firefighter, Robin Takao D’Oench’s short film Fireline tells the story of Otto Reyes (Bobby Soto), a prisoner in the care of the state of California. Otto is part of California’s firefighter program, which allows inmates to receive training, a paycheck, and favorable recommendations for early parole. Unfortunately, Otto’s parole request is denied, and his captain exclaims that he could really use him this fire season.
Frustrated by the decision, Otto tries to call his daughter to deliver the bad news, but the prison phones aren’t working, and his team is needed for an extended fire. Luckily, Otto is able to snag a phone without notice, and he desperately tries to call his daughter before the fires get worse.

“…allows inmates to receive training, a paycheck, and favorable recommendations for early parole.”
In its brief 16-minute runtime, Fireline shines the spotlight on the incarcerated firefighter program by providing a glimpse into Otto’s work from regular training sessions, the dangers of being on the frontline of a forest fire, and the frustration of not being able to go home,
Writer/director Robin Takao D’Oench effectively captures the visual and sensory experience of a forest fire in a low-budget short. Without putting the cast and crew in danger, the film effectively conveys the feeling of unbreathable smoke, intense heat, and light emanating from its deadly source.
Fireline is a powerful short film that brings much-needed awareness to the incarcerated firefighter program. In just 16 minutes, Robin Takao D’Oench captures the intense reality of these brave inmates, highlighting their dedication and the personal struggles they face. Through Otto’s story, the film underscores the value of second chances and the profound impact of this often-overlooked program.
Fireline screened at the 2024 Hollyshorts Film Festival.
