Best Supporting Actor Oscars 2023 Predictions And Contenders

Feb 1, 2023

There will be some heartwarming news in the Oscar race for Supporting Actor in 2023. Barring some unforeseen event, acclaimed actor Brendan Gleeson should finally land an Academy Award nomination for his performance in “The Banshees of Inisherin.” And, the comeback story of the year, Ke Huy Quan, is likely to stand right beside him for his work in “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” The other three nominees in this category are honestly a coin flip.

Judd Hirsch is marvelous stealing every second of screen time he has in Steven Spielberg’s “The Fablemans,” but will his co-star Paul Dano make the cut instead? Is there room for both? (We’re not so sure on that). There’s also Ben Whishaw, who gives a fantastic turn in “Women Talking,” but will he get overshadowed by his co-stars (it’s there story)? Woody Harrelson is fantastic in “Triangle of Sadness,” but the Palme d’Or winner resonate with voters? Can “Banshees” land a second nod for Barry Keoghan? …Maybe? Former winner Mark Rylance is super-creepy, but will AMPAS members make it through enough of “Bones and All” to recognize that? Do Anthony Hopkins or Jeremy Strong make a big enough impression in “Armageddon Time”? Can a deserving Toby Jones or Michael Ward overcome mixed reaction to “Empire of Light”? Will enough members see Brian Three Henry‘s subtle work in “Causeway”? Can “Babylon’s” Brad Pitt overcome recent news reports to earn his fifth acting nomination?
Needless to say, this category has a long way to go to shakeout the true contenders and the unfortunate pretenders. [Posted Oct. 7]
