Why Terrifier 2’s Bedroom Scene Is So Controversial

Oct 13, 2024

Just when it seemed like modern slasher films were starting to lose steam, the Terrifier franchise stormed in to provide an incredible horror experience, thanks to Damien Leone’s phenomenal direction and screenplay. The franchise has firmly established Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton) as one of the most iconic villains of horror cinema, alongside Michael Myers, Freddy Kruger, Jason Voorhees, and many others.

The original Terrifier film was a huge success, generating over $400,000 on a $35,000 budget, but Terrifier 2 took things to the next level, earning a staggering $15.7 million on a $250,000 budget. While the majority of its success may be attributed to the significant rise in the production budget, the controversial bedroom sequence accounts for a large portion of the film’s popularity. So, what exactly made it so controversial?

The Controversy Behind Terrifier 2 Bedroom Scene

Terrifier 2 picks off where the original film left off, with Art the Clown revived by a mysterious entity and targeting Sienna (Lauren LaVera) and her younger brother, Jonathan (Elliott Fullam). However, it is Sienna’s friend, Allie (Casey Hartnett), who endures the most gruesome fate. Prior to the bedroom scene, Art the Clown expects Allie to give him candy like other ‘trick-or-treaters’ when she answers the door, but she mocks him for being an adult and still behaving like a child. Perhaps this spurred Art’s desire to kill her even more but in a far more brutal and horrifying way.

What follows is a terrifying scene where Allie desperately tries to flee the killer but to no avail. Art brutally cuts the skin off her forehead, tears off her entire scalp, and rips her arms, all while she screams in agony. As if that weren’t enough, he splashes bleach on her wounds and rubs salt into them in order to make Allie’s misery worse. What’s really unsettling is that the victim should have died halfway through the torture, but due to some supernatural phenomenon, she miraculously stays alive as Art relishes her torment.

When Terrifier 2 was released in October 2022, it quickly became controversial for the gore and severe violence it brought to the big screen, particularly the bedroom scene, which was unlike anything we’d seen in other splatter horror films. While the first film had its share of bloodshed, it’s nothing quite like the prolonged violence Allie endures in the sequel, which grossed out and traumatized viewers. In fact, even seasoned horror fans found Allie’s death difficult to stomach, with some leaving the theater and never coming back.

This level of gore and disturbing violence has only been seen in a few films, like Human Centipede and Martyrs, so it is no surprise that the scene sparked such controversy. Furthermore, Terrifier 2 was released during the Halloween season, when people were excited to see some good horror filled with jump scares, but the film instead delivered deeply unsettling violence that left audiences unnerved. That said, the controversy worked in its favor since the franchise drew more attention with the release of Terrifier 2, and fans are now more enthusiastic than ever about seeing Terrifier 3 on the big screen, especially considering its impressive budget of $2 million.

Related 11 Most Controversial Movies Ever Made Outside of the world of horror and religiously-themed movies, these films courted massive controversy upon release, and here’s why.

Terrifier 2 Pushed the Boundaries of Horror

As previously mentioned, the bedroom sequence in Terrifier 2 is on par with some of the most violently terrifying films, Human Centipede and Martyrs, but the film also proves to be an unconventional slasher film in other instances, similar to its predecessor. Since Terrifier 2 took six years to release after the prequel, they’ve upped the ante, rivaling the shocking hacksaw scene from the first film, in which Art bisects a lady in half in front of her equally miserable friend.

Usually, slasher horror films are much more confined in their use of gore, with most killers ending their victims’ lives in an instant, but Art the Clown is an exception. He thinks what he does is funny and savors every ounce of suffering he inflicts on the victims. This was evident in Allie’s excruciatingly drawn-out death, as well as the brutal killings of Brooke (Kailey Hyman) and her boyfriend.

Director Damien Leone clearly sought to break the norms of slasher horror in all of these instances, and he definitely did, because it’s been forever since a horror film has had such a profound impact on viewers. Furthermore, most franchises throughout history have profited from controversies, garnering free publicity from the outraged media and achieving tremendous success for their films, which is precisely what happened with Terrifier 2.

Thus, Terrifier 2’s bedroom scene remains one of the franchise’s most iconic moments, not simply because it makes us scared of Art the Clown, but rather because it foreshadows the boundaries that these films would push in the future.

Terrifier 2 is now streaming on Prime Video.
