John Krasinski Says Reprising Reed Richards Role in the MCU Is Unlikely

Feb 9, 2023

John Krasinksi says he’s had no discussions whatsoever about returning to the MCU, suggesting his Doctor Strange 2 cameo was a one-off.

Marvel Studios

While Kevin Feige may have been playing to fan service by featuring John Krasinski as Reed Richards in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, we shouldn’t count on seeing the actor back in the role for the upcoming Fantastic Four movie. For years, Krasinski had said that he was open to playing that character, and many fans had just as long been campaigning for it to happen. There was a lot of hope that he’d be cast when it was announced that the Fantastic Four would be reimagined with another reboot set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Marvel first surprised fans with Krasinski playing a Reed Richards variant in Doctor Strange 2.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

No one has confirmed who plays any of the MCU’s official Fantastic Four members, but Krasinski is casting doubt on his potential casting. In a new interview with TheWrap, Krasinski was asked directly if he’s had any continued discussions to reprise the role of Reed Richards in the MCU, perhaps for the Fantastic Four movie or elsewhere. The Jack Ryan star’s response reveals that he hasn’t been called at all by Feige and Co. about more to do with Marvel, leading him to presume his appearance was a one-off, though he remains grateful for the opportunity.

“There aren’t any discussions at all, the only discussion I had was actually in the second-to-last week of Jack Ryan. Kevin Feige called and said would you ever fly to L.A. and play in our sandbox for a day? I was honored to do it. I flew right from Budapest when we wrapped and went right to the Doctor Strange set. I’m a big fan of all those characters and that world, so to get to play in that sandbox for one day was a real thrill.”

Being honest, Krasinski admits he wasn’t exactly thrilled with what happens to the Reed Richards variant he played in Doctor Strange 2, but still prefers having that cameo over no appearance in the MCU at all.

“It’s totally insane. To be in a room with all those people, and again to be a part of that narrative is crazy. But yeah, being turned into spaghetti wasn’t my end goal in life as far as how it goes in the Marvel universe, but you know what it was fun nonetheless.”

Marvel Comics

Marvel fans have been conditioned to be suspicious of actors who deny their involvement in these kinds of films, especially after Andrew Garfield frequently dismissed his rumored Spider-Man: No Way Home return before the movie’s release. So when an actor like Krasinski swears he hasn’t gotten a call from Marvel, many fans are going to take that with a grain of salt, unsure if said actor is merely trying to avoid giving away spoilers. Krasinski’s Doctor Strange 2 cameo also sounds like something that came together very quickly, so there’s always a chance that call from Kevin Feige could still end up coming in the future.

We don’t know yet who will be starring, but the Fantastic Four movie is dated for Feb. 14, 2025.
