Amazon Has A Live-Action ‘Spider-Man Noir’ Series In Development
Feb 9, 2023
Ever wonder what a Spider-Man would be like if someone mashed up the superhero with the likes of “Sin City” or “The Spirit“? Well, wonder no more: Variety reports that Amazon has a “Spider-Man Noir” live-action series in the works. And this isn’t any old multiversal take on Peter Parker. In fact, Peter Parker isn’t even part of the series at all.

Instead, the yet-to-be-titled series follows a grizzled older Spider-Man who’s not Peter Parker in 1930s New York City. Variety also notes that an insider who knows about the projects said the series takes place in a separate Spider-verse. That means this noir rendition of Spider-Man has no relation to another upcoming Prime Video/MGM+ project, “Silk: Spider Society.” That show, reportedly the first of several in the works from Angela Kang, will feature multiple Marvel characters of the 900 Sony controls.
But back to the “Spider-Man Noir” series. Oren Uziel pens the show, which he develops with “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse” producers Phil Lord & Christopher Miller and former Sony head Amy Pascal. Pascal executive produces through Pascal Pictures, while Lord & Miller do so through Sony Pictures Television as part of their overall deal there. Uziel’s recent writing credits include the rom-com “The Lost City” with Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, 2021’s “Mortal Kombat,” and “The Cloverfield Paradox.” He also helped with the scripts for “John Wick 4,” out next month, and the “Borderlands” movie.
“Spider-Man Noir” first debuted in the comics in 2009 as part of Marvel’s Marvel Noir universe. This rendition of the characters sees the superhero live in NYC during the Great Depression and gain his powers from a spider hidden in a stolen artifact, making him see visions of an ancient spider god. Amazon’s upcoming show will be the first live-action take on the character. He first appeared in the animated series “Ultimate Spider-Man” and then “Into The Spider-Verse,” with Nicolas Cage voicing the character.
This “Spider-Man Noir” series adds another upcoming project to all the other “Spider-Man” content on the way. “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse” arrives first, hitting theaters this June. But then Sony has a bevy of live-action films coming out, including “Madame Web,” “El Muerto,” “Kraven The Hunter,” and a third “Venom” movie. “Silk: Spider Society” is still in development, but that reportedly spearheads a bunch of other animated Spider-verse shows. And, of course, there’s Tom Holland‘s future as Spider-Man in the MCU, which remains up in the air (dangling by a web?).
No word on who will play Spider-Man Noir, as this show only just got announced. But an older, grizzled Spider-Man in a noir universe needs a Humphrey Bogart type behind the mask. Any ideas, Spidey-fans?
