How ‘Den of Thieves 2’ Connects to the First Movie

Jan 13, 2025

Warning: Spoilers for Den of Thieves.
Den of Thieves 2: Pantera hit theaters recently and the film serves as a direct follow-up to the original 2018 heist thriller. Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. reprise their roles as Nick O’Brien and Donnie Wilson, the cop and criminal duo who can’t seem to rid themselves of each other. The first film follows Donnie and the crew he was brought into as their getaway driver. With ingenious plans to rob the Federal Reserve without anyone ever knowing, it turns out that Donnie was the one in control the entire time. After working as a local bartender near his intended target, he vanishes to Europe following the heist with everyone being none the wiser, except for Nick, of course. However, he doesn’t realize the grand scheme of it all until Donnie is long gone.
The second film picks up shortly after the first one ended. Donnie is working on other heists in Europe while planning one in particular that’s unlike anything he’s ever attempted before. On the flip side, Nick is now divorced and in family court, losing all custody rights of his daughters. With his personal life in shambles as a result of his own horrible choices, Nick shifts his focus to catching Donnie.
However, given nothing appears to actually be missing from the Federal Reserve, no one in his department sees a reason to pursue the issue further. Donnie might have stolen millions of dollars, but because it was the cash already slated to be shredded, it appears as if there was no robbery at all. Exposing the heist and going after Donnie would only tarnish the reputations of the police department and the Federal Reserve, which doesn’t bode well for anyone.

The Events of the First Film Lay the Groundwork for the Second Film

Lionsgate

While it might not seem apparent at first, the events in Den of Thieves and the choices Nick makes ultimately lead him on a path that plays out a certain way in Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. Despite the difference in their stories, the films connect to one another extremely well. Given the extensive failures he underwent, both personally and professionally, Nick ultimately switches sides in the second film and actually partakes in Donnie’s once in a lifetime diamond heist.
Because Donnie succeeded in stealing millions from the Federal Reserve, and essentially did so under their noses, Nick feels slighted. He’s known for not letting criminals slip through his hands, but Donnie somehow managed to. As a result, Nick is baffled as to how it all went down. He’s supposed to have good instincts when it comes to his job, but he never saw the twist about Donnie coming. While he certainly feels like he failed, Nick is also fascinated by Donnie and his talents. As such, he finds Donnie and follows him to France.
Leaving under the guise of the law, Nick reveals the truth to Donnie after breaking into his apartment. True to form, Nick is still the abrasive know-it-all he was in the first film. Except this time, he isn’t there to bring Donnie down. Rather, he’s there to join Donnie and partake in the heist. Given everything that happened in the first film, Nick realizes he’ll only get what is due to him by taking it, and now he wants his own piece of the pie.

Nick and Donnie Are What Tie the Films Together

What lies at the heart of each movie is Nick and Donnie. Their relationship is what creates the overall narrative that unfolds across the films and ties them together. In many ways, each film is one chapter of a larger story. Sure, the movies can certainly be viewed individually, but when viewed congruently, the scope of the narrative surrounding one cop and one criminal expands. Without Nick and Donnie, the films wouldn’t exist. Furthermore, Donnie can’t exist without Nick and vice versa, as Nick not so subtly pointed out after breaking into Donnie’s apartment.

Denzel Washington’s Heist Thriller Is Perfect for ‘Den of Thieves’ Fans

‘Inside Man’ might be nearly 20 years old, but it’s another captivating story about a bank robber and his police counterpart.

Because of how everything transpires, Nick and Donnie’s frenemy relationship shifts into one of respect and genuine friendship. Understandably, it doesn’t take long for that to happen. Essentially two sides of the same coin, Nick and Donnie realize they have more in common than they might have thought. Plus, the line between cop and criminal isn’t all that thick, and both of them were already right up against it. However, as was the case with the first film, there’s always more that lies beyond the surface of what viewers are presented. After all, it wouldn’t be a true heist film without waiting until the very end to finally show its hand. Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is currently playing in theaters, and Den of Thieves is streaming on Max.
