Monster’s Ball remains one of the most important films within the history of the Academy Awards due to the performance by Halle Berry, who became the first black actress in history to take home the Best Actress prize. Although it is embarrassing that it took the Oscars so long to reach this very basic level of diversity, Berry’s performance as single mother Leticia Musgrove was not awarded simply to silence the Academy’s critics; it was a completely deserving trophy delivered to an actress who had proven she was capable of so much more than what the industry had given her to do in the past. Although it is Berry’s character that will be most closely intertwined with the film’s legacy, Monster’s Ball also features an amazing performance from Billy Bob Thornton that heartbreakingly captures what it is like to live with familial tragedy.
Who Does Billy Bob Thornton Play in ‘Monster’s Ball?’

Monster’s Ball is set in Georgia, and centers on Leticia as she attempts to raise her son Tyrell (Coronji Calhoun) whilst her husband, Lawrence (Sean Combs), is set to be executed for being a convicted murderer. Thornton co-stars as the corrections officer Hank Grotowski, who is himself a widower mourning the death of his wife. Paternal relationships have always been a challenge for Hank; his father, Buck (Peter Boyle), is a vile, hateful racist who fills Hank’s head with negative lessons, and his son, Sonny (Heath Ledger), who also serves as a corrections officer. Both Hank and Leticia are united by tragedy; after the execution of Lawrence proves to be too overwhelming for him, Hank takes his own life. It is when Hank is at his lowest, wrecked by guilt, that he ends up showing kindness to Leticia, and even becomes a mentor to her son. However, he knows that there is a point within their relationship where he will have to reveal to her who he truly is.
Monster’s Ball is a powerful examination of generational trauma, and exposes how challenging it can be for one generation to live within the sins of their predecessors. Although Lawrence is set to face the ultimate punishment for the crimes that he committed, the consequences fall upon Leticia, who is forced to become a single mother in a community that certainly does not afford equal consideration to black women. Hank was never given the opportunity to act in a more heroic way because of the negative lessons that he was taught from a young age by Buck; while he was ultimately able to accept that these mental health issues would not define him, he did not have enough time to pass on these lessons to his own son before his death. Although there is a poetic way in which these characters’ lives mirror one another, Monster’s Ball is shot in such a realistic manner that it never feels anything but entirely authentic.
‘Monster’s Ball’ Is Unafraid To Depict Flawed Characters

Monster’s Ball was a sensitive portrayal of interracial relationships that examined the privileges that Hank had over Leticia in their relationship. Although he does attempt to hide what he truly does from her in order to spare her added grief, their relationship is not able to proceed in a healthy way due to the lies that it is built on. Hank is certainly a racist at the beginning of the film, but Monster’s Ball does not seek to be a “white savior” movie in the vein of Crash or Green Book. Although it does suggest that Hank is not entirely responsible for the lessons that his father taught him, it also does not completely lionize him by the very end. Hank has taken the first step towards redemption, but that does not mean he has automatically become a better person.
Thornton is as important to the success of Monster’s Ball as Berry, as he had to craft a dynamic character that could be both tragic and terrifying. Hank is by no means a hero, but the message of Monster’s Ball is to take a closer look at people and not judge them based on their backgrounds. Thornton has an unparalleled ability to capture what it is like to live with working-class issues, and Monster’s Ball gave him a critical role in supporting one of the most important performances of all-time.
