James Gunn Confirms That ‘Peacemaker’ S2 Is Still Coming, But ‘Waller’ Comes First (And John Cena’s Character Returns For That)
Feb 16, 2023
At the end of last month, DC Studios co-heads James Gunn, and Peter Safran revealed their grand plans for the future of the DCEU. And there are many alluring titles in the first chapter of Gunn and Safran’s reset, entitled “Gods And Monsters.” Among them: Gunn’s upcoming Superman reboot “Superman: Legacy,” “Booster Gold,” and “Waller,” a new series that focuses on Task Force X leader and all-around ice queen Amanda Waller, with Viola Davis to star.

But not on the list of “God And Monsters” projects? “Peacemaker” Season 2, with John Cena as the titular jingoist mercenary. A peculiar absence, considering Gunn is the HBO Max show’s creator. And the show not being part of the new DCEU’s first installment led some fans to think maybe the show was canceled. But that’s not the case: Gunn confirmed on Twitter that “Peacemaker” is still part of the new DCEU’s schedule but arriving later than expected. “Heck no, just postponed while I work on Legacy,” Gunn tweeted earlier this week. “Waller first. PM after.”
Gunn’s tweet echoes comments he made last month about “Waller” and what fans should expect from the upcoming series. “Viola [Davis] is still playing Waller, and she has Team Peacemaker in this,” Gunn told The Wrap last month. “This is really a continuation from Peacemaker.” So, look at “Waller” as a bridge between the two seasons of “Peacemaker.” “Doom Patrol” creator Jeremy Carver and “Watchmen” writer Christal Henry will take the reins for “Waller,” and expect them to add characters like Danielle Brooks’ Leota Adebayo and Freddie Stroma’s Vigilante into the mix.
Looking ahead, it’s unclear if Gunn will remain the creative head of “Peacemaker” with all of his new DC Studios duties. But that’s another story for another time. In the meantime, John Cena’s Peacemaker will return soon, but his standalone show won’t be back for longer than initially expected.
