Black Adam Sequel Reportedly Not Moving Ahead as Part of DCU Future

Home Movie News Black Adam Sequel Reportedly Not Moving Ahead as Part of DCU Future

Dwayne Johnson may have attempted to get Black Adam a piece of the DCU pie by reintroducing Superman, but Black Adam 2 appears to have been grounded.

Warner Bros. Pictures

Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam journey may not be as integral to the future of the DCU as the former wrestler has led fans to believe. After initial reports that Black Adam was set to lose money for Warner Bros. Discovery, these were countered by a belief that the movie could actually end up turning a profit, albeit a small one for such a high profile release. Now, after it was suggested that Black Adam 2 could be in development, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that multiple sources have said the film will not be moving forward.

The flux of the DCU has been unprecedented, from the initial across the board cancelations of the likes of Batgirl, Legends of Tomorrow and Naomi, to the appointment of James Gunn and Peter Safran as joint CEOS of the newly formed DC Studios. While things seemed to have settled down and the future was all hyped up to be a big Black Adam vs Superman story, it now looks like this may not be the way forward either. Along with the reported shutting down of Wonder Woman 3, it seems that James Gunn just really doesn’t want to play with other people’s toys and is also not moving Black Adam 2 forward.

This may come as a surprise to many, who seemed to see this as a big part of the DCU’s future output, and if it all turns out as reported, then Dwayne Johnson could be the most surprised of them all to discover that Black Adam could be pushed to the sidelines much quicker than he anticipated.

What Is Happening With The DCU?

Warner Bros.

While it would be great to lay down a clear slate of what can be expected from the DCU, once again that is impossible to do. Even almost cast iron certainties such as Wonder Woman 3 – which was only being promoted a couple of days ago by Gal Gadot – are now slowly being buried in the graveyard of DC past that has been growing with every month since the summer.

Conflicting reports are not new, but for every story of a possible future path for the franchise, there is another confirming the abandonment of exactly the same thing. How hyped up fans will be when a new DCU roadmap is revealed by Gunn and Safran is questionable, as it can be difficult drumming up interest in something that may not be there in a few months. What this really comes down to is that if the DCU plan that is eventually revealed is not something so mind-blowingly spectacular, then we could be looking at a complete shutdown of any connected universe in the franchise.

In complete contrast, Matt Reeves’ world of The Batman, looks to have a much more set-in-stone plan that could see the franchise become the biggest part of DC’s future at Warner Bros. Discovery over the collective Justice League. While both The Batman and the Joaquin Phoenix-led Joker franchises may not be the usual flashy comic book movie, it is clear they are more bankable than anything the DCU has been considering.
