James Gunn has responded to recent DCU rumors including Wonder Woman 3 being canceled and Henry Cavills future as Superman.
DC Studios/DC Comics
Recently appointed co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn, has responded to the cavalcade of rumors regarding the DC Universe courtesy of a recent report by The Hollywood Reporter. Taking to Twitter, Gunn, who is best known for directing the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise for Marvel and The Suicide Squad for DC, offered further insight into what is happening behind-the-scenes as he and producer Peter Safran attempt to renew the franchise.
Gunn begins by revealing that what has been reported, including the surprise cancelation of Wonder Woman 3, Henry Cavill’s future as Superman, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Black Adam sequel, and Aquaman star Jason Momoa reportedly leaving the superhero role behind in favor of the antihero and intergalactic bounty hunter, Lobo, is partly true, partly half-true, partly not true, and “some of it we haven’t decided yet whether it’s true or not.” But, ultimately, Gunn asks fans to be patient, explaining what everyone should already know: that planning out a decade’s worth of movies takes a while, especially when you are building from the somewhat unstable foundations of the DC Cinematic Universe.

Gunn states that both he and Peter Safran decided to lead the DCU moving forward, “knowing we were coming into a fractious environment, both in the stories being told & in the audience itself.” Understandably, the temptation to create a shared universe involving some of the most beloved, iconic comic characters in history vastly overtook any concerns they initially had. “But, in the end, the drawbacks of that transitional period were dwarfed by the creative possibilities & the opportunity to build upon what has worked in DC so far & to help rectify what has not,” Gunn explains.

James Gunn Promises That All the Decision-Making is Being Done with Story & Character in Mind
Warner Bros.
While some of the rumors stemming from the recent report have left some DC fans unhappy, a result that Gunn fully expects to happen in some cases, he promises that “everything we do is done in the service of the STORY & in the service of the DC CHARACTERS we know you cherish and we have cherished our whole lives.”
Finally, Gunn asks fans to be patient, allowing him and Safran to give the DCU the time and attention it deserves. “We are giving these characters & the stories the time & attention they deserve & we ourselves still have a lot more questions to ask & answer,” Gunn assures.
James Gunn has often been responsive with fans and journalists via social media, and it is certainly refreshing to see a filmmaker being so forward and so quickly responding to such a parade of rumors and speculation, even if he doesn’t specifically rule anything in or out.
For now, James Gunn has one more Marvel adventure to deliver, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 scheduled to be released in the United States on May 5, 2023, as part of Phase Five of the MCU.
