Everything We Learned From Netflix’s Show

Feb 25, 2025

Gabby Petito’s disappearance and murder was the case that garnered worldwide attention and continues to disturb the public almost four years later. The 22-year-old travel vlogger’s remains were discovered in Wyoming in September 2021 after she was reported missing. Netflix’s latest docuseries, American Murder: Gabby Petito, examines the chilling case and has unearthed shocking details about her murder. Petito was on a cross-country trip with her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, and the couple documented their experience consistently on social media until her disappearance on September 11, 2021. Laundrie was also nowhere to be found, and an official warrant for his arrest was issued on September 23, 12 days later, following the discovery of her remains.
Everyone around them, including people on social media, believed that the couple was living an idyllic life by going on an epic adventure together. Still, the social media persona is a meticulously crafted lie. Everything isn’t as it seems, and the docuseries dives into the harrowing details leading up to Petito’s murder. Following the warrant for his arrest, Laundrie ran from police until his remains were discovered in Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park, a Florida nature reserve, in October 2021. Authorities also discovered a notebook containing Laundrie’s confession to Petito’s murder. Everything about this case sent a shiver down the public’s spine because her death could’ve been prevented as the signs were all there that not everything was perfect, and the Netflix docuseries revealed some shocking details almost four years after her death and Laundrie’s subsequent suicide.
Gabby Petito’s Cross-Country Trip That Ended Tragically

Gabby Petito, 22, and her fiancé Brian Laundrie, 23, set out on a cross-country trip in July 2021 and documented their travel for Petito’s YouTube channel as she was an aspiring travel vlogger. The vlogs and social media posts led everyone to believe that they were a happy couple and no red flags were present. The docuseries revealed that this wasn’t the case, with evidence consisting of audio recordings confirming the domestic abuse and bodycam footage after altercations showing a distraught Petito. There were moments where, as the viewer, you feel the tension that meticulously curated social media posts mask. Their journey was filled with hostility and proved just how strained their relationship was. Petito was last seen alive on August 27, 2021, and from there, her disappearance garnered national attention, and the search began.
This case was subject to public scrutiny, and social media platforms, like TikTok, played a role in speculation, which was both positive and negative. Laundrie’s involvement in Petito’s death was one of the speculations, and his return home and refusal to cooperate with authorities seemingly confirmed that he had something to do with it. The nationwide search concluded on September 19, 2021, when the vlogger’s remains were found in Wyoming’s Bridger-Teton National Forest. Her autopsy report confirmed that her cause of death was strangulation. After running and hiding from authorities, Laundrie’s remains were found in October 2021 in Florida at Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park. His death was ruled a suicide, and a notebook containing his confession to murdering Gabby Petito was discovered along with him.
Warning Signs That Could’ve Prevented Gabby Petito’s Death

One of the most frustrating discoveries as this case publicly unfolded was the police response to the apparent abuse that Petito was suffering. As the couple made their way through Moab, Utah, a domestic dispute on August 12, 2021, ended with a 911 call by a witness saying they had seen Laundrie hit Petito and attempted to leave her stranded at a co-op. The bodycam footage shows the 22-year-old terrified and distressed while Laundrie remained unbothered by the authorities showing up. Law enforcement failed in their duty to take appropriate action as physical abuse was evident, but they decided that separating the couple was the best decision.

The directors of the Gabby Petito documentary revealed the surprising truth behind the decision, but viewers are still calling the move “monstrous.”

The second incident that involved law enforcement occurred later that same month outside a grocery store. The bodycam footage showed a distressed Petito once again, and the audio revealed that she had confided to police officers about her altercation with Laundrie, while bodycam footage of Laundrie showed him laughing and joking with the other police officers. She admitted to striking Laundrie, and he admitted to pushing her a few times to try and get her to calm down.
He appeared to have scratches on his hands, arms, and torso. His nonchalant demeanor with the officers allowed him to manipulate the situation to appear as the victim, while the officers’ report painted Petito as the aggressor. Both of these incidents were heavily criticized as law enforcement didn’t handle these situations adequately, and this was a pivotal moment in the docuseries as authorities could’ve helped prevent her murder. They could’ve charged one or both with domestic violence and at least this would’ve kept Petito away from Laundrie.
A Disturbing Family Dynamic in ‘American Murder: Gabby Petito’

The docuseries revealed a lot about the chilling case that captivated the nation in 2021, and one dark revelation gave insight into the Laundrie family dynamics. During the time that both Gabby and Brian were missing, the Petito family was incredibly cooperative with investigators to find their daughter. However, at the other end of the spectrum was the Laundrie family with their refusal to reveal Brian’s whereabouts. They argued that they didn’t know where he was and that he hadn’t been in contact with them. The Petito family pleaded with the Laundrie family to cooperate and do the right thing, but they never responded.

Natalia Grace’s story has captivated us all.

The docuseries revealed a letter written by Roberta Laundrie, Brian’s mother, addressed to Brian with a disturbing undertone that suggests she knew what happened and still supports her son. The letter said the following:

I just want you to remember I will always love you and I know you will always love me. You are my boy. Nothing can make me stop loving you. Nothing will or could ever divide us… If you’re in jail, I will bake a cake with a file in it. If you need to dispose of a body, I will show up with a shovel and garbage bags.

Roberta insisted that the letter was unrelated to what happened to Gabby. However, it was undated, and Gabby’s family believed otherwise, as the back of the envelope said “burn after reading.” Several factors in this case continue to frustrate the public today, as people wholeheartedly believe that Gabby’s death could’ve been prevented and that the Laundrie family failed to give her family a sense of peace and prevented justice for her death.
