Samuel Sterns aka The Leader’s Big Brain Design Explained by ‘Brave New World’s Director

Feb 26, 2025

One of the biggest talking points of Captain America: Brave New World

, if you discount the transformation of Harrison Ford into Red Hulk…or the discovery of Adamantium on Celestial Island, is the return of Tim Blake Nelson

as Samuel Sterns some 17 years after he was last seen being contaminated with gamma radiation in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. But his appearance in the movie as The Leader brought a very different rendition of the character than some fans expected, and now director Julius Onah has explained in an interview with Variety exactly why the classic “egg-head” of the comic books had to be changed for the MCU.
Throughout the marketing campaign for Brave New World, while Ford’s Red Hulk took center stage – possibly a little too much by the time the movie was released – Nelson’s villain was seen only in one very fleeting, shadowy shot, which meant that many fans got their first look at the character when they were sitting in the theater watching the movie. Just like in the good old days. While discussing the design of The Leader, Onah said:

“You’re making a movie that is more grounded in terms of its visual aesthetic and style, so you want to make sure that even with these heightened characters, it fits into the world of the film. When you think about the arc of his character and the humanity that’s been taken away from him, there’s a monstrosity to him, and I really wanted to lean into that, so the moment you see him, you understand what’s propelling him as a character and his desire for retribution.”

The Leader Needed to Be More of a Monster Than His Comic Book Counterpart

Walt Disney Studios

Captain America: Brave New World has a running theme of what makes a “monster.” For that reason, The Leader needed to be visually seen as something beyond just a comically big-headed, green-skinned villain, and had to have a more monstrous appearance to fit with the way the character was to be seen by audiences. This meant that the design team needed to come up with a way of pulling off the look, and that relied a lot on practical effects. Onah explained:

“We started off with an entirely practical version of it. You still see a lot of that practical work, in terms of prosthetics and paint stuff of that sort. It was great for Tim, because he’s very immersive in terms of what he likes to do as a performer. I remember one day on set, somebody jumped when they saw him. And then when we put it together in the movie, I wanted to push it even further, to make sure that that jump could come [over] on screen. So we did enhance with visual effects, just to push it to that edge of something that hopefully wasn’t too off-putting, but again, helped you understand emotionally what was driving him.”

Like many redesigns that stray from the comic-accurate heaven that many fans look for from any adaptation, Marvel or otherwise, some loved the new appearance of The Leader, while others slammed it as another sign of Marvel Studio’s decline. In the end, these decisions are often the result of many factors, as has been the case with the redesign of the Abomination in Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
Although it has not been confirmed that The Leader will have a further part to play in the MCU’s story, it is hard to ever rule out anyone making an unexpected reappearance, no matter how long they have to wait. Brave New World has opened many doors for the MCU’s future, and fans can only wait to see whether all of these remain open or slam shut as the Multiverse Saga hurtles towards its Avengers: Secret Wars conclusion.
