Born Again’s Punisher Spin-off Is “Like a Shotgun Blast of a Story,” Says Marvel Exec
Mar 2, 2025
Following the revelation that next month’s Daredevil: Born Again
will be spun off into a Werewolf by Night-esque Marvel Studios Special Presentation led by the one and only Frank Castle, AKA The Punisher, played again by Jon Bernthal
, more details about the project have now emerged. And, to quote Brad Winderbaum, the head of Marvel Television, they hit like a “shotgun blast” to the face. In a good way, if we’re not being clear.
The Punisher special presentation, which will debut on Disney+, will see Bernthal taking a leading role both on and off screen, with the actor writing the script alongside Reinaldo Marcus Green, who directed Bernthal in the 2022 HBO crime drama series We Own This City. Green will also helm the special. So expect violence and grit aplenty.

We wouldn’t expect anything less for Jon Bernthal’s return as The Punisher in the Disney+ revival.
Winderbaum teased what’s to come in The Punisher Marvel Studios Special Presentation, and heaped praise on the Emmy Award-winning Jon Bernthal who, for many, is now the quintessential on-screen version of the Marvel vigilante.
“It’s like a shotgun blast of a story, but also has all the pathos and emotion that you want out of a Frank Castle story. It’s so exciting.
Bernthal is a generational actor. He’s incredible what he brings to all the roles he plays, but particularly Frank Castle. And he’s a great writer. He knows the character inside and out…. Also, I love Punisher, but I love Jon’s Punisher in particular. The idea that he’s in the MCU and can bring that to the greater universe, especially the more grounded street-level stuff, is a huge opportunity and, as a fan, the greatest thing ever.”
The Punisher Having a Future in the MCU Beyond ‘Born Again’ Is an Exciting Development
Marvel Studios
Bernthal’s Punisher will first return alongside Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock, AKA Daredevil in the Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again. The series stars Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, AKA Daredevil alongside Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, AKA The Kingpin, with the rest of the cast including Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Franklin “Foggy” Nelson, and Wilson Bethel as Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter, AKA Bullseye, as well as Margarita Levieva, Michael Gandolfini, and Genneya Walton. Daredevil: Born Again is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on March 4, 2025, as part of Phase Five of the MCU. You can check out the official synopsis for the series below.
“In Marvel Television’s ‘Daredevil: Born Again’, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind lawyer with heightened abilities, is fighting for justice through his bustling law firm, while former mob boss Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) pursues his own political endeavors in New York. When their past identities begin to emerge, both men find themselves on an inevitable collision course.”
The first reactions to Daredevil: Born Again have now emerged, and heap praise on the character’s return. Which should certainly bode well for Jon Bernthal’s Punisher project. While many will no doubt be disappointed that we aren’t getting another solo Punisher series, it’s great to know that, at the very least, Bernthal’s acclaimed iteration of the character has a future in the MCU.
