Vin Diesel Says Marvel’s Groot Planet X Solo Movie Is Happening

Mar 8, 2025

Vin Diesel has been known to use his Instagram to update fans on his upcoming projects, even when there isn’t really anything official on the horizon. In a retrospective post, he has now shared surprising new updates on many possible new projects coming down the line, from a new xXx movie, the next Riddick installment, and a possible solo Groot movie from Marvel Studios.
A day after the Oscars ceremony, Diesel took to Instagram to update his followers on a few of his projects, but the one that stood out the most – because previously it was little more than a passing wish-list suggestion – was Planet X, which would be a new solo Marvel movie featuring Guardians of the Galaxy favorite, Groot. After mentioning speaking with Lionsgate about The Last Witch Hunter and when to fit playing xXx’s Xander Cage again into his schedule, Diesel wrote, “Also, Disney wants their Planet X! Which some say is Marvel’s most anticipated movie, haha. The film where Groot returns to his home planet”

Marvel Studios Hasn’t Mentioned the Planet X Movie Yet

No one from Marvel Studios has commented officially on Diesel’s claims, and it may be some hush-hush project that’s being kept extra secret, but all signs point to this being a bit exaggerated by the actor. Sure, it’s possible that Diesel and Marvel had meetings about a potential solo Groot movie that will take him back to his home planet, but that’s not to say there are immediate plans to do it. In fact, this is far from the first time that Diesel has teased the exact same project with almost an identical tease. Back in 2022, when Marvel Studios released the Disney+ shorts, I Am Groot, Diesel commented:

“So my niece called me and said… thank you uncle Vin for making I Am Groot, haha… the shorts written and directed by the talented Kristin Lepore. It was a blast making, but it’s also a blast watching it with my angels. No wonder Marvel wants to make the Planet X movie.”

Diesel began voicing Groot in 2014’s The Guardians of the Galaxy and continued to do so through Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the character can only say the repeated life “I am Groot,” which has different meanings depending on its context. While only those closest to the character are able to understand him, over the course of his time in the franchise that list has grown to include more than just the initial Guardians group – even bringing audiences into that inner circle in a final Guardians 3 moment.
Even though his on-screen dialogue is only one line, Diesel provided many nuanced versions of the line, as well as the lines for many foreign language releases of the movie. The actor also found a lot of emotion in providing the voice for the role, particularly after the death of his Fast & Furious co-star and friend, Paul Walker. Diesel felt that Groot was someone who celebrated life, and it became therapeutic for the actor to find the emotion in every reading of Groot’s signature phrase.
