Brave New World’ Box Office Total Among Lowest MCU Films

Mar 14, 2025

Marvel Studios and Disney should consider it “an absolute win” — as Smart/Professor Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) would say — if Captain America: Brave New World eventually eclipses the $400 million mark at the worldwide box office before its theatrical run ends. The Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford-led superhero flick might not be experiencing the same disastrous fate as The Marvels ($199.7 million) globally, but Captain America 4’s numbers simply aren’t good enough for the film to ever be considered a blockbuster financially. Rather, breaking even is a more realistic outcome.
Brave New World’s time is running out at the box office to turn a profit, and there isn’t any hope of the film ever reaching the $500 million mark, which would allow the movie to make a small amount of money. Currently, the fourth of Cap’s big-screen installments has only brought in $370.8 million. Director Julius Onah’s latest feature film is also rumored to be saddled with a production budget that could be twice as much as the $180 million being reported by the trades. However, even if it’s true that Captain America 4 came in with a price tag under $200 million, the latest MCU installment will still struggle to just break even.

Things just keep getting worse for the theater business, despite ‘Mickey 17’s $19 million debut.

The reported $180 million production budget doesn’t take into account other costs like marketing and advertising, nor does it address the amount of money theaters receive as a percentage of the equation. Hopefully, the rumor mill is cranking out misinformation, because if the budget is indeed double $180 million, there’s no way Marvel and the Mouse House will do anything but lose money. For the film to realistically break even, Brave New World needs to make a total of approximately $425 million.
How Does ‘Captain America 4’s Performance Compare to the Other MCU Films?

 Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Captain America: Brave New World reigned for a total of three weekends in a row as the No. 1 film in theaters, but the former box office champ slipped to the No. 2 spot when Mickey 17 dropped into cinemas. For the casual observer, Captain America 4’s $370.8 million take might seem like a lot of money and suggest success for Disney and Marvel Studios. However, only three films in the MCU have performed worse than Brave New World financially— only three!
The Marvels represents the lowest of lows for the MCU franchise with its aforementioned global total of only $199.7 million. In 2008, the Edward Norton-led Incredible Hulk only brought home $265.6 million, while Chris Evans’ initial solo adventure as Steve Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) settled for a final worldwide tally of $370.6 million. However, when adjusted for inflation, the news gets even worse for Brave New World. Both The Incredible Hulk ($392 million) and The First Avenger ($523 million) would surpass Captain America 4 in today’s money, leaving it the second-worst MCU film financially of all time.
Captain America: Brave New World will likely go down as one of the worst-performing blockbuster hopefuls of the 2025 box office, but it gets even worse. In addition to its financial difficulties, the film disappointed critics and fans alike. The latest big-screen offering from the MCU is the only Captain America movie not to be “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes. In fact, it splatted to the tune of only 48%. Likewise, audiences came down hard on the film, which resulted in Brave New World walking away with the lowest CinemaScore (B-) out of all Cap’s movies. Considering all the marks against Brave New World, breaking even might not be so disastrous after all.
