Gwyneth Paltrow Considers Her New A24 Movie With Timothée Chalamet To Be Her First Serious Acting Role In 15 Years

Mar 19, 2025

Gwyneth Paltrow calls Marty Supreme her first serious acting role in years. Marty Supreme is an upcoming semi-biographical comedy directed by Josh Safdie, half of the now-dissolved directing duo the Safdie Brothers. The film will feature Timothée Chalamet as a professional table tennis player named Marty Mauser, who is pursuing greatness. Paltrow will star opposite Chalamet in a cast that includes Sandra Bernhard, Fran Drescher, Odessa A’zion, and Tyler the Creator. The film is set for release on December 25.
Speaking with Vanity Fair, Paltrow discusses acting in Marty Supreme. The actor notes that she feels that Marty Supreme gave her her first highly dramatic acting role since 2010’s Country Strong. She also quotes advice from actor and friend Cameron Diaz, who encouraged Paltrow to think about “deepening [her] life.” Safdie also notes that he thinks Paltrow’s “absence from acting has lent a vulnerability to her abilities.” Check out the full quote from Paltrow below:

[Country Strong was the last film that I was] laying it all on the line and accessing a kind of vulnerability. It’s different when you’re reprising an Avengers thing. Cameron Diaz is one of my best friends, sorry to name-drop. [She encouraged me to] think about the richness and the deepening of your life. That’s all material.

What This Means For Marty Supreme & Paltrow

Paltrow Can Step Out Into A New Role

Prior to her role in Marty Supreme, Paltrow took a hiatus from film acting after being in Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Following this gap, her only roles were in the TV series The Politician, 1 episode of American Horror Stories, a short film, and in an uncredited voice appearance in She Said. Before that, as she references, her career had been fairly consumed by playing Pepper Potts in the MCU. As such, Marty Supreme can be a meaningful way for Paltrow to re-enter the industry after a break.
This return could be positive for Marty Supreme as well, as it will allow fans of the actor to get to see her on screen again. According to early reports, including Paltrow noting in this interview that there is “a lot of sex” in the Safdie film, her Marty Supreme role is far afield from that of her MCU days. This will allow audiences to see a different spin on the actor that is most recognizable for her big blockbuster role, creating a draw to the film while also crafting an opportunity for Paltrow to re-explore the extent of her acting abilities.
Our Take On Gwyneth Paltrow’s Acting Return

Marty Supreme Is A Particularly Exciting Role

Not only is Paltrow returning to acting after a break — much like her fellow actor and friend Diaz did with her part in Back in Action — but she is doing so in a role for a major, potentially award-seeking film. Safdie has been part of some important projects, including Uncut Gems, where he helped direct comedy actor Adam Sandler into a more serious, but no less impressive, role than that he is accustomed to. Given Safdie’s background, I think it is highly likely that he can help elevate the MCU star’s performance to the next level in Marty Supreme.
