Peter Safran Confirms Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’ Is DC Studios’ Elseworlds

Mar 19, 2025

There are few upcoming superhero movies more hyped than Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II, which will see Robert Pattinson wear the cape and cowl for a second time after his debut in the 2022 film. The movie has fought against countless delays, which recently saw its release date pushed back by another year — The Batman: Part II is now currently slated for release on Oct. 1, 2027. Because of the delays, countless rumors about Warner Bros.’ faith in the movie and whether it has secretly been canceled have filled the internet. Peter Safran, the co-president of DC Studios with James Gunn, swooped in like the proverbial Dark Knight to clarify the future of The Batman, and its place in the wider DCU.
During a press conference attended by The Nerds of Color, Safran confirmed that the original plan for Reeves’ The Batman franchise still stands, despite the delays. On the topic of the “Elsewords” label, which includes DC Comics movies that aren’t set in the core DCU timeline, Safran confirmed that the “crime saga” will be told over a trilogy. “The only thing that’s [Elseworlds] is… [Matt Reeves’] world,” he said, continuing:

“His crime saga that he’s telling. The Batman trilogy, The Penguin series. That’s what’s in that lane.”

Craig spoke to MovieWeb leading up to the release of his new series ‘Dope Thief’ and cleared up confusion about his involvement in ‘The Batman II.’

During the conversation, the DC Studios co-head further clarified the state of the Elsewords label. So far, The Batman trilogy is the only set of films that take place in the alternate universe, as the rest of DC Studios’ slate fits into the newly rebooted DCU. Safran continued:

“So still under DC Studios. Still under us. We have an incredible relationship with Matt. But those are the only things. It was important that Clayface be part of the DCU. It’s an origin story for, you know, a classic Batman villain.”

‘The Batman: Part II’ Begins Shooting This Year… Hopefully

Warner Bros.

While there are many that have accepted the recent delay to The Batman: Part II, as they would rather get a great movie a year later than a rushed one on time, some DC fans have become overly worried by the slow progress of the film’s development. In December, Matt Reeves said the script was in the final stages and that it would be finished in early 2025. No official announcement has been released confirming the finished state of the script yet.
Despite that, Reeves is still adamant that the project will get its cameras rolling this year. “We haven’t shot it yet, I think [we begin shooting] at the end of the year,” star Robert Pattinson revealed last month. No plot details for The Batman: Part II have been revealed yet, but already know that Pattinson, Jeffrey Wright (Commissioner Gordon), and Colin Farrell (Penguin) will return for the sequel. The big question mark hangs over the movie’s villain. Many suspect that The Joker will be the main antagonist. However, a large portion of the fan base also believes the mysterious Court of Owls could be next up for The Batman.
