‘Ash’ Is the Best Movie To Watch This Weekend
Mar 22, 2025
The weekend of March 21, 2025, marks a relatively quiet weekend for new releases, but that does not mean there are not some outstanding titles worth checking out. Notably, sci-fi and horror fans should be pumped to check out the latest from Flying Lotus, Ash, starring fan favorite Aaron Paul from Breaking Bad. The highly contentious and controversial Snow White live-action remake starring Rachel Zegler is set to sink or swim in theaters, with critics, pundits, and online personalities tuned in to see how the film fares.
Also in theaters, The Alto Knights is a gritty crime thriller starring Robert De Niro, and Bill Skarsgård faces off against Anthony Hopkins in the psychological horror film Locked. This weekend, streaming also brings a few notable gems. We will go over what you need to watch this weekend, including why Ash is our top pick.

Flying Lotus may not be a household name, but the rapper-turned-filmmaker has impressed fans with his unorthodox approach to the genre. Starting with the genre-defying Kuso, Flying Lotus would follow that up with one of the best segments in the V/H/S franchise in “Ozzy’s Dungeon” for V/H/S/99. Ash will mark Flying Lotus’s first major theatrical release, backed by a phenomenal cast, including Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad Fame, modern-day action movie icon Iko Uwais, and Baby Driver standout Eiza González.

Ash follows an astronaut named Riya (Eiza González), who wakes up on a distant planet to find her entire crew slaughtered and her memory wiped. As she navigates the foreign landscape, issues become more troublesome when another astronaut, Brion (Aaron Paul), appears, claiming to have responded to a distress call. Untrusting her new companion, Riya then must navigate growing suspicions of Brion, her fragmented memory, and a hostile alien planet. The plot may seem generic, but the trailer below should have fans salivating to check out Ash in theaters.
Other Movies to Check Out This Weekend
Those wanting to hit up the theaters this weekend have options other than Ash. Despite the controversy and lack of sales facing Snow White, MovieWeb’s own Julian Roman praised the film in his review, particularly Rachel Zegler’s performance, stating, “Rachel Zegler’s incredible vocal range, dance, and acting abilities are on full display and cannot be denied.” The latest from director Barry Levinson’s The Alto Knights puts Robert De Niro in duel mobster roles as Vito Genovese and Frank Costello; you can read our full review here. Finally, director David Yarovesky of Night Books and Brightburn fame looks to spin a stylish psychological horror tale in Locked; who is not excited to see Bill Skarsgård go up against Anthony Hopkins in a devious cat-and-mouse game?
Want to stay in this weekend? There is a batch of new releases and new streaming films to check out. The Oscar-nominated Sing Sing finally lands on Max. Netflix has Den of Thieves 2 making its way to streaming. While the action sequel was met with mixed reception, Greg Archer noted the buddy cop angle worked great to help push the franchise forward; read his review here. Looking for a fantastical rock opera? Hulu is also bringing O’Dessa to their platform this weekend; Will Sayre noted in his review that the movie is destined to become a future cult classic.
