James Gunn Says Superman May Still Be the DCU’s ‘Biggest Priority’ Despite Rumors
Feb 24, 2023
While there are rumors abound concerning the future of Superman in the DCU, James Gunn says the Man of Steel is still a huge priority.
Warner Bros. Pictures
We’re still waiting to see what happens with the future of the DCU as far as some of DC’s most popular characters are concerned. Perhaps most notably, that includes the Man of Steel, as played by Henry Cavill. It was just recently when Cavill made his long-awaited return to the role of Superman with a surprise appearance in Black Adam. Dwayne Johnson was hoping to expand upon the Superman vs. Black Adam rivalry in follow-up films, though according to the rumor mill, Black Adam 2 won’t be moving forward after all. It’s also been reported that a planned Man of Steel sequel was recently canceled.
Whether or not that’s the case, fans shouldn’t expect to see Superman simply tossed aside so soon after Cavill’s return. On Twitter, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn posted about the 44th anniversary of the first Superman movie with Christopher Reeve. This had one fan asking if we are going to see Superman in the DCU, at which point Gunn offered a response that made it clear that the Man of Steel will have a presence in one way or another.
“Yes of course. Superman is a huge priority, if not the biggest priority,” Gunn said.

Does James Gunn Like Henry Cavill as Superman?
Warner Bros.
While Gunn isn’t saying specifically that Cavill’s Superman will be the DCU’s Superman, he is denying that he has any issues with the actor. In response to another tweet suggesting that Gunn “does not like Henry Cavill,” Gunn stated that this was “false.” When Gunn was given some pushback by The Den of Nerds on Twitter, claiming to have had people in the know telling him otherwise, a more fiery response was shot back.
“So weird. You seemed so plugged in! Anyway, I just had forty people reach out to me to say you just got kicked out of your Mom’s basement. So sorry, man,” Gunn wrote.
Recently, Gunn has also said that while some of the rumors about the DCU are true, others are half-true while others are outright bogus. He isn’t offering much more clarification, likely as the plans for the future of the DCU are still coming together on the drawing board, and certain decisions, such as what to do with Superman next, may not have yet been set in stone.
