Jon Favreau Says There’s No Planned Ending & Characters “Could Be With Us For A While”
Feb 24, 2023
As we are just days away from Season 3 debuting, and with news that Season 4 is already written, it would appear “The Mandalorian” is still chugging along and doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. But with modern TV, especially with uber-expensive series such as this live-action “Star Wars” tale, you would assume there’s an ending in sight. They can’t just keep telling ‘Mandalorian’ stories for the next five or 10 years, right? Well, according to Jon Favreau, there is no planned ending and no big conclusion that the series is building towards.

Speaking to Total Film, Jon Favreau was asked about the future of “The Mandalorian.” Specifically, he was asked if there is an endgame in mind for the show, a definitive ending that Favreau and Co. are hoping to reach soon. The short answer is no.
“No, I don’t – I think the beauty of this is that it’s a middle chapter of a much larger story,” said Favreau. “And though we’ll have resolution over time with these characters, I think that how these characters fit into the larger scope and scale, but it’s not like there’s a finale that we’re building to that I have in mind. Quite the contrary, I love for these stories to go on and on. And so these characters potentially could be with us for a while, and I really love telling stories in their voice, and I love the way the adventures unfold and I’m looking forward to doing much more.”

Obviously, there will be an immediate reaction from some fans where visions of “The Walking Dead” come to mind—a show where no ending was envisioned until well after the show had seemingly run its course. You have to hope that Favreau won’t run “The Mandalorian” into the ground as seemingly happened with “The Walking Dead.” However, there should be some optimism that Lucasfilm isn’t going to let “The Mandalorian” overstay its welcome. The studio knows that “Star Wars” content is a money-maker, but you can also have too much of a good thing.
That said, Lucasfilm is diversifying its “Star Wars” TV content, as “The Mandalorian” is just one of several series that have premiered on Disney+ and are also in the works. Favreau’s baby is about to spawn even more spinoffs after the success of “The Book of Boba Fett.” We are expecting “Ahsoka” and “Skeleton Crew” to exist in the same time period and have some sort of ‘Mando’ crossover. Then again, is that a good thing? “The Walking Dead” had plenty of spinoffs, with more coming.
Regardless, if you’re hoping “The Mandalorian” would wrap up in a nice tidy fashion, perhaps after Season 4, then you’re out of luck. It would appear, at least for now, that Favreau wants this ‘Mando’ train to chug along for several more years or more.
