With the Introduction of Amy Rose, ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4’ Looks Like It’ll Continue a Franchise Trend

Apr 15, 2025

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 ends in the best way possible. While the Robotniks (Jim Carrey) are seemingly gone for good, the mid-credits scene features some amazingly new introductions to the film series: the iconic, fan-favorite villain, Metal Sonic, plus the introduction of another longtime fan-favorite character, the lady hedgehog, Amy Rose! Following the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, I’m fully convinced that Sonic the Hedgehog 4, due out later in 2027, will continue the franchise’s incredible five-year hot streak. It’s time to explore why that will be the case.
Every ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ Movie Shows Improvement Over the Previous Entry

The Sonic the Hedgehog film series is riding high right now, and it’s clear to see why. Each installment has shown marked improvement over the previous entry. The people making these films, including director Jeff Fowler, clearly love the video games and the characters on which they are based. They are just as big of fans as the actual Sonic fanbase. Case in point, Fowler’s response to the rejection and derision of the original movie design of Sonic. After the outcry, Fowler quickly responded to the fans and listened to their complaints. He recognized that the film went too far in adapting the iconic SEGA mascot – a rarity for the person at the helm of a major Hollywood blockbuster to take such an approach. The fans felt heard and acknowledged. It did cause a delay in the movie’s release date and required altering Sonic’s CG-animated design for the film. However, the gamble paid off. The redesign of Sonic in the film worked massively well with fans and audiences, and the first film, released in early 2020, was a huge hit at the box office.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was also viewed as an improvement over the first film, with the introduction of other franchise favorites: Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba). It all culminated in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, released last December, which, for the first time, saw a Sonic the Hedgehog film receive a Certified Fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with an 85% Tomatometer rating. The film proved equally successful with audiences, grossing over $491 million at the worldwide box office, making it the highest-grossing Sonic film to date.

One Character Is Not-So-Secretly Spoiling New Additions to the Sonic Franchise – and ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4’ Should Be Epic

Coincidence or a clever Easter egg?

Each time out, the filmmakers make improvements to the overall Sonic cinematic experience. Sonic 3 features a lesser focus on the annoying human characters, focusing more on the anthropomorphic stars Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and the new antihero, Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves). Sonic 3 also incorporates more of the iconic music from the classic video games. If Sonic the Hedgehog 4 maintains this trajectory, and adds characters such as Amy Rose and Metal Sonic, it will almost certainly surpass Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
Amy Rose Adds a Refreshing New Character Into the Mix

It would be an understatement to say fans are pumped about Amy Rose formally joining the Sonic film series. The mid-credits scene had fans roaring and cheering in theaters across the globe. Besides bringing a beloved character into the franchise, Amy Rose adds refreshing elements to the franchise. She provides new energy as the first major heroic female character for Team Sonic, bringing something new to the table. Female fans and little girls now have a female role model in Amy Rose. Additionally, Amy’s presence potentially allows for adding some romance into the mix, something the franchise has not previously explored for its lead characters. What if the films finally look at a possible romance between Sonic and Amy? Or perhaps there will be a one-sided, unrequited romance between the characters. Either way, it would be a fun, new, and exciting element for the film franchise.
