‘Thunderbolts*’ Star Hannah John-Kamen Explains Ghost’s Absence From the MCU

Apr 19, 2025

Thunderbolts* is giving the MCU’s misunderstood and forgotten characters a chance at redemption, and that includes Ghost, played by Hannah John-Kamen. Ghost debuted in 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp, and hasn’t been seen or heard from in the MCU since. But, Thunderbolts* is giving the underappreciated character the spotlight, and John-Kamen says a lot has changed since audiences last saw Ghost.
During an interview with Fandango alongside her Thunderbolts* cast mates, including Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Sebastian Stan, and Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen revealed what we can expect from Ghost’s MCU return, and what the character has been doing between Ant-Man and the Wasp and Thunderbolts*. “She’s alone… She’s very much a lone wolf, and she’s very much stubborn with that,” John-Kamen said of Ghost’s mental state going into Thunderbolts*. “It’s going to be a very difficult job to be around people and to be around ‘these’ people.”

Why Florence Pugh Begged MCU Boss Kevin Feige to Let Her Risk Her Life For ‘Thunderbolts*’

The coolest scene from the ‘Thunderbolts*’ promos is all thanks to Florence Pugh.

When viewers were introduced to Eva Starr in Ant-Man and the Wasp, she was searching for a cure for her condition/powers which allowed her to render herself intangible. Also on the run from S.H.I.E.L.D., Starr realized that her condition would slowly kill her unless she could find a cure, leading her to Hank Pym’s quantum research. But, Hannah John-Kamen explained that Ghost doesn’t feel so victimized in Thunderbolts*. In fact, the character has a brand-new suit, which comes with a kick-ass theme song. She explained:

“She has a new suit. She has a whole new suit. I named her ‘Gertrude.’ She’s from Berlin, and her theme song for the suit is Rammstein’s “Du Hast.” So I’ve got this whole different stance. She’s not vulnerable. She’s not shaking. She’s not an open nerve of fearing her death… She is stronger than ever, which is dangerous.”

‘Thunderbolts*’ Early Reactions Tease Another MCU Hit

It’s a common narrative that the MCU has been in a steady decline following Avengers: Endgame. Despite the occasional hit, like Deadpool & Wolverine and Spider-Man: No Way Home, the large majority of post-Endgame MCU projects have been underwhelming, both critically and commercially. Most recently, Captain America: Brave New World failed to impress audiences and critics this February. The first reviews for Thunderbolts* won’t be released until much closer to its May 2 release date. But, reports from test screenings have been released, and the film looks incredibly promising.
“I won’t say too much, but I think if you’re feeling jaded by the ‘capesh-t’ genre because they’re all feeling the same, I would check this one out,” read one reaction on Reddit following a test screening. “The journey it takes the characters on is actually interesting, the team dynamic is great (not unlike Guardians of the Galaxy) and the way Sentry/Void is executed into the story is really fascinating.”
Thunderbolts* pits the titular team and its accompanying asterisk against one of Marvel’s most powerful villains yet, Sentry (Lewis Pullman). As Marvel’s psychotic version of Superman, Sentry is potentially an Avengers-level threat, but with Earth’s mightiest heroes in disarray, the Thunderbolts* are the only ones who can step in to save the day.
