‘Sinners’ Drives a Stake Through ‘Minecraft’s Heart in Blockbuster Domestic Box Office Debut

Apr 21, 2025

After a disappointing start to the year with two back-to-back under-performers at the box office — Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 and Barry Levinson’s The Alto Knights — Warner Bros. has rebounded in grand fashion. A couple of weeks ago, the studio delivered A Minecraft Movie, which broke opening weekend records and has since blazed past the half-billion mark worldwide. This week, W.B. delivered another over-performer in director Ryan Coogler’s genre-bending original movie Sinners, which reunites him with star Michael B. Jordan. Sinners took the top spot on the domestic box office charts this weekend, on the back of tremendous reviews and audience reception.
The movie grossed an estimated $45 million in the first three days of release, after witnessing an uptick in revenue on Saturday thanks to positive word-of-mouth. This is higher than Nope’s $44 million debut. Sinners holds a “certified fresh” 98% approval rating on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, in addition to an impressive 97% audience score and a rare (for an R-rated film) A grade on CinemaScore from opening day crowds. Produced on a reported budget of over $90 million, Sinners combines Coogler’s trademark lyrical storytelling with hardcore genre elements. Expect the movie to continue performing for weeks, and for Coogler to find himself at the tippy-top of the A-list.
Slipping to the number two spot after dominating the domestic charts for two full weeks, A Minecraft Movie grossed just over $40 million this weekend, pushing its running domestic total to nearly $350 million. Directed by Jared Hess and starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, the video game adaptation defied mixed reviews and rode a wave of positive audience response, all the way to a global total that currently stands at over $700 million. The question now is if it has enough gas in the tank to hit the coveted $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office.
‘The King of Kings’ Exceeded Expectations, While ‘Warfare’ Passed a Close Competitor

Exceeding expectations in its second weekend, Angel Studios’ faith-based offering The King of Kings grossed over $17 million and finished third on the charts. The animated film is closing in on the $50 million mark domestically, and fell by under 10% this weekend thanks to extra interest over the Good Friday and Easter holidays. At the same time, The Chosen: Last Supper trilogy didn’t witness much of an uptick in attendance, having presumably exhausted its appeal in the last month. That being said, The Last Supper has generated a combined total of over $40 million at the box office.
The fourth spot was claimed by the espionage thriller The Amateur, starring Oscar-winner Rami Malek in the lead role. Now in its second weekend, the movie grossed just over $7 million, pushing its running domestic haul to just under the $30 million mark. The top five list was rounded out by Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza’s acclaimed thriller Warfare, which is also in its second weekend of release. Warfare grossed just under $5 million, pushing its running domestic total past the $17 million mark. Produced on a reported budget of $20 million, the movie has now overtaken fellow Iraq War thriller The Hurt Locker at the domestic box office.
