Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Lioness’ Finds Global Success on Paramount+ & Netflix

Apr 23, 2025

Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan

continues to be a franchise force to be reckoned with, and his underrated action thriller series is now another major hit for the writer, producer, and director thanks to streaming. Best known for the neo-noir Western series Yellowstone and its various spin-offs, Sheridan also created the spy thriller show Special Ops: Lioness, and the series is now finding success on not one, but two streaming platforms.

Created by Taylor Sheridan, Special Ops: Lioness premiered back in July 2023 and introduced audiences to Oscar-winner Zoe Saldana

as Joe McNamara, a CIA agent in charge of the black ops Lioness team. Inspired by a real-life U.S. Military program, the series follows Joe as she attempts to enlist female operatives, known as “Lionesses,” and prevent the next 9/11…all while attempting to balance her personal life with her professional duties as a spy.

Taylor Sheridan Starred With Chuck Norris in This Forgotten TV Episode

Taylor Sheridan’s resume stretches as far back as the mid-’90s when he starred alongside Chuck Norris in an episode of ‘Walker, Texas Ranger.’

Alongside Zoe Saldaña, Special Ops: Lioness stars Laysla De Oliveira, Dave Annable, Jill Wagner, LaMonica Garrett, and James Jordan, with Hollywood icons Nicole Kidman and Morgan Freeman also featuring. Lioness is now climbing the global charts on both Paramount+, where it stands at #5, and Netflix, where the action series sits at #9 on the streamer’s top 10 after becoming available in Australia, Canada, and more earlier this month.
What’s Going on With ‘Lioness’ Season 3?

Paramount+

The first season of Special Ops: Lioness proved to be divisive among critics and audiences, with the action series landing scores of 56% from the former and a far more impressive 75% from the latter on Rotten Tomatoes. “Zoe Saldaña provides the energy of a Lioness, but these Special Ops are largely derivative and unconvincing,” the critics’ consensus reads. No doubt thanks to the clout of Sheridan, Lioness was renewed for a second season despite the critical response, which debuted in October last year. Thankfully, now the foundations have been laid, Special Ops: Lioness Season 2 managed to vastly improve on its predecessor, landing scores of 89% from critics and 71% from audiences.
Currently, we are still awaiting confirmation of Special Ops: Lioness Season 3. While nothing has been made official yet, the show’s South African streaming home, Showmax, did offer a major clue recently that seemingly confirms Season 3 is a go. Responding to a question from a fan regarding the development of a third season, Showmax said, “Soon, soon showmie, we’ll let you know.” You hardly need to be a savvy spy to work out what that means. However, with the recent developments at Paramount, which will see the streaming platform slash budgets, could Taylor Sheridan be seeking a new home for his projects in the future?
